Hey guys-

I got my '84 Camino late in late december with it's stock wheels- actually pretty much stock. I put cragar S/S's 15x7 all the way around wrapped in BF Goodwrench Radial T/A's. It's drives great and looks great. But my problem is it looks more "Good from afar, but far from good." The dealership(yeah i got it from a dealer..weird eh?) had a painter that was obviously a friend of something paint the car. They didnt bother taking off ANY of the chrome so on some of it there is black paint. Any ideas on how to get this stuff off? I can take one of the pieces off since it is on the piece of chrome on the window pillar(outside ofcourse). Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks a bunch-(i swear I am gonna kill that painter guy, there's also big bubbles on the hood.   )

For overspray on chrome/aluminum/stainless trim, you could use a real fine scotchbrite pad or steel wool. If you got the patience, brake parts cleaner and a rag will do the job with out scratches.

Awesome- next time I am at Wally I will pick some up and try it out. The abrasive pad doesnt sound to hot on my list because of the abrasive part! Do I need to pay special attention to kepp this stuff away from the paint on the body?

Thanks-
Luke

What do is spray the brake cleaner on a rag, then wipe onto the overspray. If sprayed directly on the paint, it'll at the worst, remove the wax, it won't hurt the paint.

Here's another little trick:

Protect the new paint with masking tape first. Run a layer (or two for added protection) of tape as close to the chrome to be cleaned as possible. Don't press it on too hard though.

Will protect against abrasives and solvents. Remove very carefully when done since the paint doesn't run under the chrome.

Adding to the masking tape tip, you might want to use the blue 3M painter's masking tape instead of the standard (and cheaper) masking tape. The blue tape masks just as well but has the added advantage of being easier to remove, leaving little to no adhesive on the surface it was attached to.

As for the abrasive pad, you could also use synthetic steel wool. I comes in all abrasive grades, but I would suggest the 0000 grade (finest).

Both of these products are available at Home Depot/Lowes. The tape can also be had at WalMart...dunno about the 'fake' steel wool.

I'll tell you this...you'll find a gazillion uses for that 'fake' steel wool!! It is reusable, can be washed, leaves no fines/fibers, and seems to last forever. One use I have found is, with with cleaner/wax or solvent, it's great at removing bugs from the bumper and road tar from the lower body panels/wheel wells. You use this stuff once and you'll NEVER go back to steel wool. (I do a lot of wood painting/staining and this stuff is WONDERFUL!!)

As for removal (paint) products, you could also try OOPS!! or Goof-Off...along with the fake steel wool. But I would urge anything you plan to use to try it in an inconspicuous spot first and see if you are happy with the results.

Just some thoughts...

Good luck!!
