Arizona Governor Napolitano signed a bill to exempt quailfied collectible vehicles 15 years old and older from the states mandatory emissions inspection and maintenance program.
There are a number of qualifications that must be met before the vehicle qualifies so don't assume that a vehicle is exempt just because it is 15 years old or older.
I am unsure how long it takes for the new law to be in effect after it is signed but it will happen.
It's great to see our state represenatives and the governor make this new law!

Expect to re-insure your vehicle as a collector car which means a speciality insurance company. Also expect mileage limitations as that's one of the provisions I saw in the law.

It's not a state mandatory thing, because we don't have emmissions in Yavapai County. =/

(Lucky for me, of course.)

Well the law went through and our governor happily signed it. They had a big "collector car appreciation day" and everything. Haggerty insurance was one of the big lobbyists for it.

I switched my policy over on my El to Haggerty so that I'd be in compliance with the provisions of the new law.

Here's a link for anyone interested.

The big things to remember are:

You have to have another car to drive every day and prove it with a copy of your insurance policy for that car.

Your collector car has to be insured with a collector car policy that limits use or mileage

You have to keep the vehicle in a closed garage for most insurance policies

The car has to be over 15 years old

The law is set to go into effect April 30th not March 1st like some articles say.

I know I'll probably have to go fight with the state MVD this year since my registration is due in MAY and that's probably too close for the state to catch up on their own.

Thanks a bunch for the update. I'm in Yuma, but like to keep up to date on this issue since were growing so fast it may someday affect us. There is no way my 87 will pass the visual inspection even though I am sure its cleaner than factory since I added F/I :?

Hi all,

Just an update, I got the collector insurance from Hagerty in Mid March, Was agreed coverage and up to a certain amount they didn't require any official appraisal. I set my limit to 15K. It was cheaper than the coverage that I had on it before.

All the same rules apply as before so no daily driving etc. They don't ask for an odometer statement or anything though. Just try not to get into an accident at 7AM on the freeway on the way to work :D

As for AZ MVD, very simple. They had it in the computers already and for the first time since I owned the car I was able to do a two year renewal and no smog check. Oh baby do I have plans!

So all you folks in the smoggy areas of AZ, Go ahead and go for it!

I did it too ! All you have to show is proof of collector car insurance (mine was also cheaper than what I paid before). Show insurance verification on your beater car (daily driver) for proof that you have another driver.

That's it ! You can cut the belt off the smog pump in the parking lot 8)

Now lets all hope for a cooling trend and another check from Bush.... then we can buy more gas and rip up some road!
