For the longest time I wanted too build a 327 for my 78. Well, after pricing everything, machine shop work included, I think I'll just get a GM Crate engine. I can pick up a 290 horse 350 for under $1,600.00 and have a 3 year warrenty.

The crate Motor that GMPP Sells are really good and not normal production Motors. All new assembly they are not rebuilt or what is known as "Seasoned Cores". I like the ones I've gotten from them in the past and they do last .
327s are really nice too but getting a little old and long in the tooth. Perhaps a 5.3L would be a bit better choice they're 326 (327) Ci motors. More updated roller lifters OEM, and so on.
I read an article where GMPP now sells a kit where you can put an LS1 or LS2 in your older ride and have it be a carbureted motor not a Fuel Injection Motor. So they do a lot towards getting our attention.
Good luck.

I also am a big fan of the brand new GM crate motors. I like the fact that the engines are all new. No rebuilt or refurbished parts. 4 bolt mains can easily be had for the same money and the real bonus is the full GM warranty on the engine. Rebuilt, refurbished and remanufactured engines simply cannot compete with these engines when it comes to durability and longevity. I have come to this conclusion from experience. I've done all of them and what you get with the new GM engines is the way to go.
