: Rebuild?
Stockish 04-20-2005, 04:29 PM Does anyone know how hard it would be to buy a used engine and rebuild it? on a scale of one to 10. I am a novice but my dad has lots of expierence with rebuilds (he drives a VW). I am looking for a cheaper option then a new crate motor, very tight buget.
Bowtie 04-20-2005, 04:35 PM How about another option? Advance Auto (I think they're in NC), has just started selling used engines. Not remans, but used. They come essentially turn key ready to install and with a 1 year warranty.
I just replaced a Mazda engine for my son. A reman was almost $2,000. The used one was $400 and it came complete with fuel injectors, sensors, etc.
Just a thought. Let us know how it goes.
Stockish 04-20-2005, 06:12 PM that sounds like a great idea bowtie, and yes theres one not 5 miles frm my house, i usually only go there for oil and filters so i'll look into it
64SS427 04-20-2005, 08:51 PM Sounds like you're operating on a small budget, so here's one to look into. Scoggin-Dickey sells a new crate 350 for about $1300 under part number 10067353. It's nothing fancy, but if you're simply in need of an engine, it will do the job. The web site is www.sdpc2000.com. I checked with my local dealer and they beat his cost by about $300. I'm considering getting one for my parts chaser beater.

Stockish 04-21-2005, 12:51 PM alright, thanks 427
78 Hot Rod Elky 04-21-2005, 01:47 PM If you need an idea of how much it would cost you and your dad to rebuild one here goes, but first this is a great way you and dad could spend time with each other and for you to learn how an engine works so you know how to fix one in the future. Basic rebuild kit stock for a small block chevy engine $150 to $200 complete with new pistons, Machine shop work depends who you chose and ranges from $250 to $500. So you see this could save you much $$$$ and get some great experiance out of it. So you see you could do for under $1000 even at this price you could achive 300 to 400HP under a grand.
hop this gives you another option.

Stockish 04-21-2005, 02:33 PM yeah, my dad and i are going to go down to the local autozone and look at their used engines, because he's not wild about rebuilding a junkyard chevy :-(, but then were off to the junkyard, :) (need a tailgate, hood, interior.....) so i'll look into both options, thanks alot, the rebuild sounds better than i thought, i am shooting for about 330-350 hp
64SS427 04-21-2005, 09:10 PM My local machine shop wants $700 labor for machine work alone. I was contemplating rebuilding a 283, but I can buy this 350 for less when it's all said and done. I have a tired 327 in my parts chaser now, I pulled it out of the junkyard a couple of years ago for $400. It still pulls strong, but it tends to smoke some too. That's the gamble you take with any used engine. The nice thing about that 350 crate motor is that it's all new with a 1 year warentee, 3 years if it's put into something between 1970 and 1986 that came with a 350 originally. A rebuilt or used engine may have a warentee also, but do you want to take the chance of having to pull it out again?

ElkyPete 04-22-2005, 07:28 AM If you were in TX I know a performance place that would build you a 355 for about $850.00 to $950.00 and a Really nice power plant for about $1200.00 but its got to be pick up I think.
Stockish 04-23-2005, 07:08 AM yeah, i was thinkin the other day and decided on buying a used one from the junkyard, I am 15 and this is my first car, the way i figure it is that i'll buy a used 350, then do some baisic bolt ones when i get a job, prefrebly at a parts store, then if she dies on me i can buy a 350 crate, probably nicer then i wuold be able to know and drop it in one weekend, reusing the speed parts. Am i overlooking anything?
