I'm working on building my own engine but I don't know all the dynamics. Can anyone tell me the mathematics of how to know what kind of valve and cam lift/duration/timing and all that goes and what is affected by them? Would I need new valve springs and how would I know what to get? I know it's a long question but any knowledge would be appreciated.

Try this place;
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/camshaft.htm
Also there are discussions at most of the Cam Manufacturers web sites. Most Cams come with recomendations as to which springs a to use etc...
Comps site is; http://www.compcams.com/information/Tutorials/
Hope this has helped some. Good luck wit the upgrades.
Would I need new valve springs and how would I know what to get? If you were to go with a Comp cam, they have a complete kit available with all their cams (K kits). Everything is already matched for you. I'm sure most other manufacturers do the same thing. :cool:

Thanks Guys! Your ideas were a great help. Most of it was self explanitory but there was some other stuff I guess I just need more experience with. I'll keep ya posted on how I do.
