hey i have a couple of questions before i tackle a project. if i drop an LS1 into a fifth generation camino, what manual tranny is best for it? i keep hearing about the T56. is it hard to turn a fifth generation automatic into a manual? about how much time, money, and effort does it need and what parts besides the tranny?

If you're gonna drop in a LS1.. then Use the T56 from the same! 98-02 F-bodys can donate the parts you'll need... Use the LS1 Flwheel/ Clutch/ Hydraulic T/O bearing and T56 trans.. Bolt in deal.. You'll just have to move your x-member back to fit, shorten your driveshaft, and come up with a way to mount a master cylinder to a G-body clutch pedal.... I've got a T56 in my 80' and LOVE IT! Modifications to the trans tunnel will be necessary for clearance.. but, IT's Worth IT!
In your case.. The Trans is the easy part.. your gonna have fun getting the LS1 mounted and running.. that's the real work!
Have fun and good luck!

You can mount the master for the trans on a bracket under the power brake booster. For a more detailed explanation of this and how to drop a LS1 and t56 into a G-Body click here and read the updates. http://www.montecarloss.com/ls1montecarloss/index.html
