: replacing carb

I'm in the process of ripping the 305 out of my 86 and having it bored, probably .30 over. I'm planning on using an edelbrcok performer rpm manifold but I don't know much about carbs. I prefer carbs to fuel injection because its easier for a novice like me. So first of all what does cfm stand for and what type of carb should I use?

Forget the 305ci and get a 350. Use a Holley Street Avenger 680cfm.

I'd appreciate any help but I've already decided not to give up my 305 so please don't try and convince me to buy a 350 I've gotten a lot of that lately.

Hey dude,,, do what u want to do,,, its your ride... nothing wrong with a 305,,, i have one, and plan to put edelbrock 600,cfm , headers,intake...and drive it till it dies, then i'll probably go 350, unless i find a good one before then at a decent price....

good luck

Well OK, if you don't want good advise then just tell us what you want to do then do it-----we have a little trouble trying to justify telling someone to go spend lots of money for no good reason-----heres just a little information that may influence your decision---the 305 was an early smog motor that was terribly inefficient (bad milage)---did you notice they had a very short production run compared to other small blocks. Just compare the prices of ,030 over 305 pistons to .030 over 350 pistons and you will quickly see that it may be cheaper to build a 350 and when you are done you WILL get better power and will Probably get better fuel mileage, By the way I'm an old grey headed retired fart that has been playing with cars since I was 13 years old and I cannot think of a good reason to spend extra money to overhaul a 305 as long as 350s are available...................Dan

You're getting good advice here. If you don't agree with it, fine. But you would contribute better by trying to justify your opinion rather than just saying to the group not to tell you something.

You initiated this thread.

Hey, the guy only asked for input on a carburator.

I don't see where he wrote asking for somebody else's opinions about his 305. :?

82 meeno got the picture.

No he is asking for more than advice on a carb; he's talkiing about boring which means a complete overhaul. He could probably buy a 350ci and overhaul it for about the same cost as overhauling that 305ci. He would end up with a more powerful and efficient engine. What is there not to like?

Ok Ok, You're right, I miss read the post...

Yeah if you're going to tear the motor down and bore, then you might as well buy a 350.... you might a bit cheaper or about the same...

my bad.

Wow, so many posts and no one still answers the question?

Well, raptor, if you really are gonna stick with that tired old 305, it doesn't need many cubic feet per minute to keep it happy, it would probably be fine with a 500cfm or less carb depending on how all-out you go. For that, a rochester quadrajet, with its vacuum controlled variable cfms would be fine. I got a replacement one rebuilt by Holley and it only cost $150 after I got 30 back for the core on the old one.

But regarding everyone else's advice, I have to agree. The dollar to horsepower ratio will be much better with 350. Reading the other poll thread on engine size, the 400 SBC is also an attractive alternative with very similar costs to build.
