Sylvania Silverstar. These are plug and play. Go to your local auto parts store. Remove the old headlights, replace with the new. No wiring or anything else to modify.

The headlight pictured above is still a halogen. If you look at the box it says "the look of HID." Believe me, there is quite an improvement with this headlight over your standard halogen, and you don't have to do any real work or any type of modification for it to work.
If you want them for your 74 and you have the standard round headlight, the part number you want is H6024 ST.

I have them on the low beam side, like them, but they could use a little better diffusion, (hot spot in the middle). Sure would be nice if the Silverstars were available for the upper beam also, but I have not found any.
EDIT: I spoke too soon. Went to the Sylvania web site and found the upper beam IS available. Upper beam #H4651ST, low beam #H4656ST.

I just ordered a conversion kit for my '81 "495314 HEADLIGHT CONVERSION KIT 4656" from JC Whitney. They take the "278814 LONG LIFE HALOGEN 9003 60/55W" bulbs. The original socket fits on the bulb. The '81 has one headlight each side. But you probably already knew that.
Total cost about $66. I could not find anything retail in my area so I had to go mail order. The advantage I see going this route is that I only have to remove the headlight bezel once since I can repalce the bulb from the engine compartment.
Has anyone else tried this conversion or one like it? _________________ Old Chevys never die

Ditto on the Silverstars, MAJOR improvement. Also it's important to be sure all your electrical contacts are clean and corrosion free so be sure to clean all contacts when you change the bulbs. Also check the relays and replace if necessary. proper electrical connections are a must. Check the voltage at the lights, you may be surprised how low it is after all those years. _________________ Leo

I just switched to Silverstar Xtravision for low beams.Even brighter than the regular Silverstars,& are a nice clean white, compared to my stock slightly yellow weaker bulbs.I saved them though, because they still worked when removed. The best lights I have found so far are the Eurolights E-code housings. They use an HB4 replacable bulb which you can get in any wattage and color.
They also have the european citylight bulb in them as well. I paid $65 for mine delivered. I'm thinking of getting another pair and putting low beams inplace of the high beams. We can have 4 low beam headlights in TX so was thinking of running another switch to turn the inner low beams on with.
Sure is nice being able to see at night. Also these have a better pattern that lights up the road but doesn't blind oncoming traffic like typical US spec lights do. The european spec for lighting is much better than it is here. _________________ Robert Adams
