I'm getting ready to change the drive gear and after investigating numerous sources I've learned that I can drop the pan and get to the governor(sp) where the gear is located. Has anybody done this and would like to share their experience? I've done a lot of mechanical work but never inside a transmission. TIA _________________ NECOA MEMBER #004
Actually the govenor is on the tail shaft inside the tail housing not under the pan---you will need to remove the drive shaft, jack the tranny up on the pan, remove the transmission mount and crossmember then take off the tail housing to access it---make sure you have a gasket to replace it and a set of good snapring pliars handy---its not a big deal............Dan _________________ I don't think I have ever had a car that was "FINISHED"........unless it was totaled.

I finally got around to checking my transmission, it's not at my residence, and found that there isn't a tailshaft on a 2004R like on my current 350. Now I still don't know how difficult a job it is to change the drive gear. Anybody got any insight? _________________ NECOA MEMBER #004
what gear are you trying to change and why? the speedometer gear is changed by pulling the cable out , removing the clip and swapping the old and new gears, reinstall the retainer clip and insert the speedometer cable and gear back into the tail of the transmission. If you are wanting to replace the actual gear on the output shaft that may require a complete teardown of the transmission to get to it if the tail housing is integral to the case............Dan _________________ I don't think I have ever had a car that was "FINISHED"........unless it was totaled.

Drop the pan.
Remove the 4 bolts holding the governor cover.
The cover will come off fairly easy and the governor will pull out with it. Leave the governor in the cover.
There is a clip on the small end of the governor holding the cpeedo/gov gear on. It has a goofy collar.
When you take the gear off the gov be very careful to kep everything in position as there are springs and ball bearings you can loose or get out of place.
Install is the opposite. The one thing you need to do is always replace the gov cover gasket every time you remove the cover. It is very very important. I have a few if you need one but you should be able to have a pearts store order one.
Unfortunatly there are very few speedo gears available for the 2004r...
As for driven gears. Do not swap the gears in the housing like you do on other tranys. The driven housing and gear are matched.
Also if the driven gear you need is available new still, buy it. The original ones were plastic shafts like the th350 and other gears while the replacement is steel. _________________ Robert Adams
