As the subject implies, my LH window regulator counterbalance spring broke and now the window is very wobbly going down-I have to roll it down very slowly so I don't hopefully damage anything else. Does anyone sell this part separately or do I have to buy a whole new regulator and try to pilfer the part?
sprign from almost any 70s 80s gm car is the same trucks too i think
i think i have an extra one laying around if you still need one i can check real quick
although it seems these cars did not have or use the spring, unlike most other applications
our 85 elky doesnt have the spring on the reg assemblies
and i know of a couple here that dont either
i dont know why notbut i have found that if they have the spring then the glass jerks and hops when rolling down
its crazy
good luck _________________ randy the vehicle-aholic in lincoln il

You can use the spring from any two door G-body with manual windows or a 78 with power windows.
I have personally done this so I know it works. I have swapped the power regulators in my 84 with 78s which used the old large motor and counterbalance springs. I have an extra set of 78 regulators as well.
You will have to pull the regulator out of the door to put the new spring on. You can do it with a pair of vice grips. Put the regulator on the floor and your foot over the spring then wind the spring around till it catches the hook. Make sure the regulator is at the end of it's travel so you have to wind the spring the least. Also don't put the spring on all the way when you start. Just get enough to hold it then wind it on and then tap it all the way down with a hammer. _________________ Robert Adams

I was hoping to see if I could do it with the regulator still attached, is it possible? If not, then how do you remove the regulator and the glass from it? It looks like the reg. is riveted on but I can't tell if the window glass is riveted on or bolted on.

You might be able to do it in the door but it'd be a real pain.
The regulator is held to the door by 4 1/4" rivets. Knock the center steel out then drill them out or just use a chisel and hammer to cut them off. Making sure the glass is down at the time.
Then slide the regulator to the rear of the car to get all the wheels out of the tracks.
Now lift the glass back up by hand hold it up and then wiggle the regulator out of the door through the big hole in the middle after you take the cross piece off that covers it.
I'll do it for you as it'd be a good excuse to go back to HI. (used to live at Hickam) If you need any pointers I know a guy you can contact there and he might be able to help you out. _________________ Robert Adams
