I am looking to remove the AC unit and Heater from my El Camino, so it is easier to work on, and, the heater core is shot anyway.
.
Is there an easy way to do this? I already bought a custom fab plate to cover the hole, but when I look at the box in the compartment, it seems complicated?
.
My original intent was to use a sawzall and just cut wround the bolts and pull it off. Can I do that, or should I be aware of something to watch for?
.
I only use the car for fun, and realize I won't have any heat or A/C, but don't have a problem with that. The motor is out of the car, so now is the time to do this.
.
Besides, if I ever do decide I want to have heat, I guess I could retro fit it with one of those AC replacement boxes I see on the site, but for now, just looking to remove everything and plate it.
.
Any instructions, experiences and coments are welcome. I figured I'd check you you folks before I really screw something up, lol.
.
Thanks,
Mark

Hey Mark,
The AC/heater box is really not that hard to pull off of the firewall. I just removed mine from my 69 elky a few months ago because the AC had been disconnected long before i got the car so i took out the huge box and put on a AC delete pannel so i would only have the heater left. The big box in the engine compartment only really contains the AC condenser and then the blower motor underneath the inner fender.

If you have the inner fender off already then all you need to do is go around the box and remove the 10 or so nuts and bolts that hold it to the firewall and you can pull it right off. Thats all there is too it.

I dont know anything about removing the heater core and other parts from underneath the dash so maybe someone else can help you out there.

I hope this helps,
-Kevin

You are right about it being fairly easy to remove by just taking all the nuts and bolts off. In his 79 the heater core and evaporator will come with it.
The inside ducts are all real thin wall ABS plastic and weigh about as close to nothing as you can get. You will have to pull the dash to remove the interior ducting but not worth the effort to save weight.

i removed the heat a/c in my 78 a few weeks ago since none of it woked and had been disconnected for some time. it is just like 12 10mm bolts around the outside of the box,i had no idea what i was getting into i just started taking it apart and the plastic box was pretty much dry rotted so it will just break off as you go. i did have the saw zaw on hand but dont remember needing it. just be carful of the vac lines for the flapper doors and there is a duct that runs into the dash i just dis connected it from the opening from the radio bezel being out...and that was pretty much it! i even cashed in the heater core and ac condencer at the scrap yard for a cool 7.50...

where did you come by the delete pannal for the firewall?...i was gonna make my own but it would be worth looking into...
