Gday guys (& girls)
After a little more help if possible.
I am trying to decode the vin on my 71, have not really thought about it until now as I have been spending so much time on my 78.
the vin is

VIN Number: 134801L80638

currently running a blown 454 but would be nice to know what it was running when she was born.

Cheers
Oz C

Cheers Mark

So I need to refer to the other tag that shows what motor was originally installed in the 71.
As the Vin indicates a V8 but not 350 396 or 454

Will get down to the shed and look for it now.

Thanks again for that site

That's a sharp looking El Camino, Adam. GM did not put the engine designation in the VIN until 72. The trim tag or "cowl tag" is of no help either for this info. Finding a build sheet is the only way to know for sure.

I just bought a 72 from a member in Arizona.
The VIN in 72 shows the engine type with a letter code, and the previous owner found the build sheet to confirm the 350 2bbl (H in the VIN).

It doesn't appear they did this in 71.

Mine isn't an SS, so I'm not so concerned about the original engine except as needed for passing emissions in Phoenix. I'm gonna stick with the small block in the 72 and the big block in my 66.
