Question... I have a '72 El Camino currently without AC (it's previous owner had a new 350 engine put in). However, looking at the control panel on the dash, there are four sliders: one vertical (for the fan speed) and three horizontal (from bottom to top, defroster, warm/cold, and air). What I'm wondering about is that "air" slider... Does that mean that my car originally came with AC? If so, any ideas how simple or involved it would be to install it now? Thanks for your help.

That is the non A/C panel. The "air" control may open the vent to outside air. If you were to add A/C, the aftermarket kits would probably be the best route.

Hmm... I wonder what vent? It have a vent on each side at the kick panel that open and close by a knob at each vent you pull out. On the dash itself, the only vents I see are the window defroster vents (and between them, where I believe the front speaker(s) is...?).

Your Switches operate as follows ~~~ FAN Just as it says, turns on the Fan and operates it's speed. DEFROSTER Operates an internal Vent Door in the Duct work that will route air between the defrost and floor vents. WARM/COLD Opens and closes a valve that regulates how much engine coolant is allowed to pass through the Heater Core, acts like a thermostat of sorts. AIR Opens and closes another internal Vent that in essance adjusts the amount of Outside air that is brought into the passenger compartment, with it clossed the fan basicley recirculates the cabin air, open it draws some fresh air in from outside. In the clossed possition the cabin will heat up faster on a real cold day, when the cabin reaches the temp you like, you can slide it towards the open position to maintain the temp. Much like you do with the Hot and Cold water faucets in a sink or shower, but instead of mixxing Hot and Cold water, it mixxes hot and cold air. This can also be done with the WARM / COLD switch, by regulating the flow of water through the heater core. I hope that gives you some understanding on the opperation of your heating / ventilation system

That it does, thanks. I just wasn't realizing that the "air" switch was just a "fresh air/recirculating air" control...
