I'm looking for help/advice on a problem I'm having with my AC/Heat temperature setting.
The A/C cools great, but if I move the slide temp control even the slightest bit, the A/C quits blowing cold air. It doesn't quit blowing, just not cold air. Any attempt to vary the temperature stops the cold air.
It's been a few months since I've used the heater, but as I recall it was the same issue with the heater.
Any and all help will be appreciated _________________ Dream It - Plan It - Build It
Sounds like a blend door problem. You should get a full range of temperatures from cold to hot.
This is common on these cars. If you look up behind the glove box, you'll see where the temp control cable connects to a small lever. This is what moves the blend door, and usually it breaks off where it pivots. You should be able to get a new one at any store.

Hey, Thanks a bunch.
I've got a couple of days of meetings, but as soon as I can, I'm going to check out what you said. _________________ Dream It - Plan It - Build It

You were right on target. The pivot arm is broken. Mine doesn't have the illustrated knob on top. It just has a hole. When I put my finger down in the hole it appears to have a smooth surface something that keeps the pivot arm attached.
Before I tear something up, how do I go about removing the arm so I can replace it? _________________ Dream It - Plan It - Build It
In the picture, that's actually upside down. The tee on the pivot shaft is what holds it into the air box. You align the tee and push it into the hole, then when you install the linkages it won't come back out.

So, is it a matter of trying to turn it somehow from the top till it aligns again so you can take it off? Certainly, it's not meant to ever be remove? (I hope)

Got the part this evening, and it's installed and working. Thanks a bunch Hamilton. You sure were a big help.
In the process of trying to get the glove box light to burn steady, I managed to break a terminal to the back of the bulb. Sooo, does anyone know where I may get a replacement glove box light assembly for my '86? _________________ Dream It - Plan It - Build It
No problem, I'm glad you got that fixed! Took me a year or two before I realized I needed to fix my temp control... Now you'll find the heat comes up very quickly when on full hot, and of course you can control the temperature perfectly. It's so much nicer to drive on humid/rainy days when you can have dehumidified air that doesn't just freeze you out.
Sorry, I don't know about the replacement socket. Though, on most of the GM sockets you can actually remove the terminals. If you had another socket with the same type of contact, you could just swap them. Does that light have terminals similar to the parking lights? If so, you can get the parking light sockets from most auto stores.

You might try giving GM Classic parts a call or look on their website: www.gmclassicparts.net.
They seem to have a lot of used parts for El Caminos/Monte Carlos and might just have a pigtail you can use. _________________ 1979 El Camino SS Royal Knight
