Most likely you have a 400, as my 68 does. Look at the trans. pan shape. I.E. the bottom of trans. Also as you drive count the number of times it shifts. You probably have a 373 or 411 geared rear end, Is it a 10 bolt or 12? Stomp it! see if it leaves 2 black marks or one then you'll know if it's a posi. rear end.
Have fun learning what you got, and there is no better site than this one for help, the people on here are great!!

thanks for the reply. i havent gone to crazie on it yet, it was siting for a year in a half with nothing being done to it, so i changed the oil and flushed the radiator put power steering fluid and put some nu finsh polish on it and a new air filter thats all can aford for now to day will be my first full day with it. i'v tryd guning it from a stop but the motor just stops so im thinking the carb needs to be rebuilt or the fuel pump needs to be replaced, so far the only thing thats not stock that i noticed is the front power disc breaks.

If it was origionally a 327 it's more likely to be a th350.

As I said these guys are very Good. It makes sence that a 327 would have a 350 with it. I just got my resto. package from Chevy. It has a great deal of imformation in it. Between this web site and that package I now have more info on my 68 than any other car I've owned! You should send off for yours. It's free and it's very informative, like the people on this site! It tells you how to get one on one of the topic's here.
Also I don,t want you to break your truck, wait till it's ready then (rod) on it. Get any numbers you find anywhere on it to help you in the future.
Good Luck
Have fun
Donny

Again~~~~ You most likely have a 350 tranny [ 3 speed ], There is also a chance you have a PowerGlide tranny [ 2 speed ]. Drive the car and count the shifts. If you want an overdrive trans, the simplest to install would be the 200r4. The 700r4 would require trans mount and drive shaft modifacations to name a couple.

thanks guys i still havent had a chance to gun it on a smooth srtaight away all these roads are bumby hard to tell when it shifts i know second gear kicks in at 15mph and some times it hesitates just alittle but not much, when i gun it at 20 25 it does not drop to first and so far i cant tell when 3rd kicks in. to day after driveing for an hour and a half {the most its been drivin in a year and a half} like a mile from my home the motor started to shake like the idle was way off but it wasent it felt like a couple of the spark plugs were not firering or gas was not geting to one or more cylinders i would give it a little gas and the motor shaked and i wasent really going any where so i babyed it till it went back to normal.
any advice for that

like i said its been siting for a year and a half maybe two with nothing being done to it. the only thing i did is change the oil oil filter, flush the radiator, and add power steering fluid. so im thinking some of the spark plugs are'ent fireing sometimes, spark wires look just fine

You said nothing about draining the gas and flushing the tank, did you do that? Gas goes bad very guick. Your Carb may also need some attention, like a rebuild. Seals and gaskets go bad real fast in Carburators that have had fuel in them then allowed to sit for 6 or more months. Fuel pump and lines should also be checked real good.

Your not going to want to hear this I know, ~~~~~ cause at 20, and at the price of gas, it's like liquid gold to ya, BUT I would dump it, flush the tank, have the carb done and start fresh.
I notice your in region 17. I'm also located there (in Vegas). If your anywhere close, and interested, There's a LARGE ROD and Custom Show
this coming weekend in Henderson on Water Street, FRI. SAT. SUN. Stop by and have a great time, I'll be there with a few Customs from the shop.

Yeh, Them are Cadi Tails on that one.
If you do, wait and drain and rebuild, you will be glad you did in the long run. The potential for damage if you don't, in my opinion, is not worth the gamble.

You can blow them out with air, but be sure to look at them for ROT, cracks , ect. The rubber parts may need to be replaced sitting that long.
At least I would, it's cheap INSURANCE.
