i was wanting a little info on modulator valve in a th350...my tranny pan is leakin a bit but not excesivly..and i also am pretty sure the mod is shot...while i had it disconnected and hanging for a couple weeks it leaked out some fluid on the ground...i have not done a lot of driving since hooking the mod vac hose up and ive been keeping a close check on tranny fluid level and also the vac hose going to the mod to make sure its not pulling thru fluid to the carb....but it is having trouble shifting into 3rd...it seems to do alright if i shift thru the gears manually...but if i start out in drive it will shift fine untill it should be in 3rd...i have to pull it into 2nd then shift it into 3rd..and this does not work every time....could this be caused by the bad mod valve? im planning a filter, mod valve and fluid change asap...also i put a qt of lucas in it yesterday to see if it would help...no noticable change yet.....thanks,mike _________________ 78' EL CAMINO SS(mine)
If fluid ran out of the modulator the diaphragm is ruptured.
Be careful when you pull it out and don't loose the little rod! _________________ 84 Elky with 455 Buick, Tremec TKO600 5 speed, 8.5 3:42 posi -

ok yea i sort of forgot to mention that...the tv cable would not attach to my new carb so i pushed the plastic connector back on the cable and used the metal ball stop at the end of the cable to go thru the return spring hole on the carb and used a zip tie around the end of the ball to keep it from coming out of the hole in the carb linkage...when i move the linkage it pulls the tv cable but not much unless you are at a wide throttle position...should i adjust it to pull it more with less movement from the carb....
and whats the deal with the little rod?????? _________________ 78' EL CAMINO SS(mine)

It is about an 1/8" in diameter and about 1 1/2 inches long and sticks into the modulator. The diaphragm pushes on it to apply pressure to the actual modulator valve in the tranny. Length is critical so if you loose it it makes for a really bad day.
I taught auto tech school for years so this is somewhere I have been many times. Lessons learned the hard way are rarely forgotten. I got really good at making them. _________________ 84 Elky with 455 Buick, Tremec TKO600 5 speed, 8.5 3:42 posi -

You have a TH350 transmission. They do not have TV cables, they have kick down cables. Running with the kickdown not hooked up or not adjusted right will not cause you to loose third gear. If you had a 700R4 or a 2004R 4 speed OD transmission then you would have a TV cable. That not being adjusted properly will cause premature transmission failure.
