OK I have almost a full tank of gas. The car (85' 4.3L FI) has been running great until this morning. I cranked it up, idled for a few minutes, started to back up out of the driveway and it died. Tried recranking it and it wouldn't fire up. The battery is good. Replaced plugs, wires, dist cap/rotor a couple of weeks ago. So i figured it couldn't possibly be those item. So.....I sprayed a little starter fluild down the throttle body and it cranked right up but them died again. So I'm thinking it fuel related type problem. I went ahead and changed the inline fuel filter in case it was plugged up......didn't help. Also, when i turn the key on, I can hear the fuel pump for a few second then it quites which it always does.

ok tell me this. When I took my in-line fuel filter off from under the car and then turned on the ign switch. Shouldn't there be fuel sqirting out of the gas line ?? There wasn't any.
Also. can an external type fuel pump be use in place of the internal type?

Correct !!!! With the line disconected, and key on, FUEL IN THE TANK, You should be getting allot of fuel pumping out the line, THAT is if the pump is good. If not , as I thought , you have a bad fuel pump. It will have to be replaced. NO YOU CAN NOT use an external, change out the bad one. It's not that hard to do, (with an empty tank).

Thanks man. So I definately have a bad fuel pump because the gas only dripped out of the line when the switch was on and/or off even though i could hear the pump running for a few seconds and then shut off.

You have to run battery power directly to the pump to verify that the pump is not running, you could just have a bad relay _________________ 385 stroker, brodix, weiand super charger,

Problem solved.
Turned out to be a blown fuse that blew when the air cleaner pinched one of the injector's wire. Sure glad I didn't have to pull that gas tank.

That's good you found the problem, and here's a tid bit of info ~~~~~~
the fuel pump would not run a few seconds with a blown fuse, it would not run at all. In which case the info you provided in the beginning was in error. BUT THAT'S ALL GOOD ~~~ You got it fixed. That's what counts in the end. _________________ http://elcaminocentral.com/gallery-album_CoyoteOn2s77Cage.html

However it wasn't the fuel pump fuse that blew and the pump was buzzing. It was the fuse to the injectors and because it's an impulse type system, as long as the injectors not getting power and operating, the fuel will not start flowing. My machanic showed me all of that when he was testing everything. Yes I know it's strange but sure glad it's working again.
Thanks again for everyones help. Great Forum.
