I am in the process of putting a 74 together for my mother and the interior was pretty ratty.

I have found many of the pieces but I need most of the interior plastic trim in black.

If anyone knows where to find a few pieces or how to restore them please let me know.

Here are the items I am working on:

**NEED** A pillars: Lots of sun burn and they are crumbling
**NEED** Upper A Pillar corners: Same as A pillars
**NEED** Sail Panels: Same as A pillars
**NEED** Drivers side Lower Sail Panels/door jamb: Broken/Wrong color
**PAINT** Kick Panels: Wrong color
**PAINT** Trim with dome light above rear window: Wrong color
Ashtray: Wrong color
Radio: Currently missing, trying to decide on what to go with

I know I can paint/dye the items that are the wrong color but I fear that they won't match the others. That is fine for all of the trim except the ones I need, but then again, I will probably paint all of them together, including the ones I have to find, so that they all match. I am looking for a new Ashtray that is already black so it matches the dash.

I think I am on the right track here, any advice?

I found a new dash, carpet, had the seat recovered, new upper and lower door panels, weather-strip (complete), new steering wheel, as well as various items to put it back together, but I'm sure I will find more as I move forward with this.

Most of those parts are going to be salvage yard or Ebay items. I haven't found anyone doing reproductions yet.

If the pieces you find are in good shape then you cold use the plastic paint systems that use an adhesion promoter. Takes some cleanup work though.

Another option, if you have the cash, is to do a leather or fabric wrap on the pieces in the color of your choice.

Just the joys of a 4th gen.

my GF and i were driving around in the EC friday afternoon, and i reached up for some reason and grabbed the plastic trim by the windshield. it crumbled like a old girl scout cookie before i knew what i even did.
this is SO sad, that the plastic on the inside of these cars is so prone to sun and heat degradation. seems like every car i have run across from the mid 70s is this way, regardless of make or model. i just sold a 68 skylark that i could find interior parts for...in good shape, all day long, but finding anything for this car that isnt brittle or rotted is going to be tough.
i would say your best bet for matching the color of your trim and dash will be to go to an auto paint shop and have them make you some matching paint. i go to valley motor supply here and have them mix up a couple cans of spray paint for what ever application i need. just take a piece of what ever you want to match with you for color comparison, and remember that you should try to go just a touch lighter than what you might think is a good match, new paint always comes a bit darker than what you are trying to match.

I know what you mean, most of the pieces I have seen have been similar to mine. My fingers went right through the crumbling A pillars when I took them off.
I have thought about wrapping them in leather or fabric but I'm not sure it would look right, but it is an alternative... Has anyone done this?

The A pillars are available from EC Parts for $29.95 each.

That's great news about Ecparts.net. Seems to be one of the few suppliers actually trying to get us some decent parts.

I've always had good experience with them.

I remember talking to Rick over there for over an hour when he found out I had a 74. He's got two of them. Great people.

$30 is pricey, but these are new! Can't beat that. I have put off buying these since I need to paint all the pieces to match anyway.

chris.....are your plastics just crumbly, or actually broken? i am going to try fixing mine with some epoxy. lay a backing on the inside of the cover with some tape [duct tape, probably], and fill the crumbled parts with the epoxy, texture it to match the rest of the cover, and paint to match. i figure $5 worth of putty on something that i would have ended up trashing anyway couldn't hurt if i end up finding a way to repair an original part.
the weather is supposed to turn cold and rainy this weekend, so i will have some time on my hands to try it.

Rob, how do you plan on getting the right texture?

All the pieces I have to replace are crumbly and one is broken. These are so crumbly I doubt they could be filled... unfortunately

the area i need to fix isn't that big, only about 1.5"X maybe 3", so exactly matching should not be that tough. i can make a mold out of anything.... plaster, hard silicone, elmers glue and flour.....if i were to get really particular, i would make a mold of the entire piece first. i am not that picky. actually the pattern is similar to the standard "leather" pattern you see on vinyl.
as long as the rest of the plastic isn't as bad as the part i put my thumb through, it shouldn't be that hard to fix.

Well, I came up with another complete 74 El Camino to scavange the right color parts and pieces to swap onto my mothers car.
When I am done I just have to find a home for it.
The interior is in pretty good shape so it will make it much easier to get her car together.
