Anybody move their battery on 5th Gen EC to spare tire location?
If you've already sucsesfully pulled this off, can you pass any info on wire gauge and other details? Would sure be appreciated.
After installing S-10 front coils on 79 EC, I'd like to take some weight off the front end. Aluminum heads are at the other end of the spectrum(far spectrum$$).
The SC&C stage 2 Kit lowered an additional 3/4 inches of fender clearance away: so now there's a slight rubbing issue.
SC&C Stage 2 kit makes the G body handle far superior to stock front end geometry that the loss of 3/4 inch clearance is so worth it that I recomend talking to Mark at Savitske Custom & Classics.
I used #1 gauge wire from the starter to the remote cranking solenoid. Ran it thru PVC along the frame and used split conduit for the rest. Used thermal wrap on about a foot of it at the starter.
From the alternator I used #6 wire thru a fuse link to a terminal block I got from an s10 at the boneyard. From there it goes thru the firewall and thru the existing wire chase under the carpet at the left side of the drivers seat. Then under the plastic carpet trim plate to the kill switch. Use split conduit on this also.
You'll need to run the 12 gauge purple wire from the ignition switch to the remote solenoid. I used a marine type solenoid that has a ground terminal instead of grounding thru the mounting bracket. You'll need a jumper at the starter solenoid from the battery terminal to the S terminal where the purple wire came off of.
I've seen cars that had the cable hooked from the starter directly to the rear mount battery. Not a good idea, safetywise.
For the ground cable I used #1 from the battery, thru the floor and mounted to the frame. Another ground runs from the bat. to the upper spare tire belt mount to ground the body. On the engine there are 2 grounds. 1 from block to frame and 1 from block to body.

I've moved battery to the trunk in two cars--not El Camino. In both cases I used the hot terminal on the alternator as the battery terminal for the rest of the wiring system under the hood and it worked great. There was just one heavy wire from the battery to the starter and a basic battery cable to ground in the trunk. Where the wire punched through the trunk floor I used a piece of heater hose as a bushing, not near as elegant as hel98. On one car I used welding cable for the cable to starter, on the other I got a battery relocation kit, like from Jegs or Summit.

Thanks greywolf on sharing your set up on battery relocation.
Maybe we have different altenators, or I just cant figure how to hook starter to hot leed ,where ever the hot lead is on alt.. I have a plug into the alt lead with some kind of plastic for insulation.
Could any one shed some lite in my engine compartment ? Pictures would be great too! Thanks
