Some background

1978 El Camino that had a 305

Got the car with no motor but cam with 350 T trans

I put a 1983 305 out of a Pontiac Parisienne, change to an HEI with vac advance and a Qjet non computer and the car has headers

The car is running good...can I set the timing by ear?

Also the fan on the 305 is BIG hits the fan shroud,,running it now with out one.

Would the fan on a Pontiac Parisienne be bigger then an El Camino?

Also I hooked the oil pres sending unit up to the port in front of the HEI, my oil press is pegged out according to the gauge.

I have what i thought was the temp gauge wire hooked up but the gauge is not going up....the Parisienne had a light ...do i have to change that sending unit for the gauge?

First the temp gauge. You need a temp sensor, the one off the donor car is a temp switch. The temp sensor location is on the left (driver side) bank between no I and no. 3 spark plug same as the temp switch.

You need to set the timing with a timing light. I would start with about 8 degrees BTDC with the distributor vacuum line disconnected and plugged and 550 to 600 RPM. I believe you should have around 33-36 degrees total advance around 2500 RPM with the vacuum line connected. Read this article,

http://www.vettefinders.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/corvette.Vette101Story/ID/19

If you don't have a timing light a shop might do the job for a nominal fee. Don't have a clue about the size of the Pontiac's fan blade size. Should not be hard to pick up the right size at a salvage yard. Are you running the engine without the fan or the shroud? You need both.

Right. The oil pressure sensor usually screws in to a hole just above the oil filter. Using headers will require pipe elbows to clear the headers or relocating the sensor. One member stated that there is a plug above the timing cover that can be removed and used for the oil pressure sensor. Another alternative is to "T" off the pressure switch location just below the distributor.
