I am looking for any information or guidance that will help me identify what type of Transmission and Rear End is currently installed on my 1972 El Camino. I bought the car from a guy and the only info I have is that the Engine and Tranny have been changed out. I'm just starting my first Resto and need to find out what I'm dealing with. Thanks.

Welcome to ECC, John. There is a code stamped into the right axle tube close to the differential housing, facing the front. You may need to use a little sandpaper to read it. You did not say if the trans is auto or manual, if auto, they can usually be identified by the shape of the pan.

Thanks for the Welcome to ECC. What a great Web-Site, and what a great group of helpful enthusiasts. Thanks also for the info on identifying my Transmission type and Rear End. By the way, the Transmission is an Automatic. I thought that I read somewhere on the web that the transmission pan shape or the number of bolts identifies the part. I am grateful and appreciate you taking the time to help out. Thanks again.

I checked out the pictures of your El Camino that are posted on the site. Very nice.

Thanks, John. Have you found the ID code yet? There is some rear end ID on "nasty z28" as well. It is for Camaro but may be of help. Post your code up here and we can probably figure it out.

CANTED and dougs85,
Thanks for all of the information. With all your help, I have identified both the Transmission and the Rear End.

I just took custody of my 72 on Wednesday. A couple of hours of wrenching and we were able to get her fired up. Fortunately the engine seems to be in pretty decent shape. However, there is still a ton to do. Kind of overwhelming trying to figure out where to start. I'm thinking I should attack the preservation issues first to put the rust in check. The body is in semi decent shape with a little rust and some good dents to attend to. The inside area of the back window is where I think I'm going to concentrate for now, as that seems to be the worst.

Thanks again for your assistance

John
