I have an 86 Elky. The previous owner rebuilt the 305 and added a mild cam, and Edelbrock intake and a Edelbrock 500n cfm Performer Carb. He had someone tune the carb after installing but it was running way to rich (mixture screws were set at 2 1/2 - 3 turns each). I have crannked them down to 1 1/2 turns a piece and will do a better adjustment with a vacuum gage later - seems to have helped.

Problem is that once in a while the engine hesitates a bit and every once in a while it just seems to flood out.

A friend of mine (former gearhead) says that Edelbrocks usually need a fuel pressure regulator as the stock fuel pump kicks out a bit too much pressure for them (their floats or something) that causes the problem I have. Has anyone heard of this as well - it soes not seem to be taked about in the blogs I've looked at.

And, if I do put one in, what kind do I use and what should it be set at?

Thanks,
Michael

Highly un-likely Check for worn / dirty needle & seats, or just replace them, then re-adjust float level, install a quality in-line fuel filter.

You need to make all adjustments on the carb with a vacumm gauge

The metering rods probaly need a lighter spring installed because the camshaft is not producing enough vacumm to pull them down into the jets
so your loading up at idle, you can buy a spring kit for these carbs
