Can anyone tell me if a unit out of a S 10 will fit a 1985 El Camino

Yes. as long as theyre both the 7.5 (both elcaminos and s10s ran other size diffs but the most common were 7.5)

is it a factory s10 posi carrier youre looking to install? if its the factory one that will be a gov-lock unit and theyre weak and prone to breaking. not worth the install in my honest opinion. even when theyre working they stay unlocked more than they lock while driving.

if you want something worth putting in thats real posi look to 3rd gen V8 z28 and iroc camaros, some of them had a real clutch type posi carrier that parts interchange with g-body diffs in

We are all about 10 years too late for easy swaps. All the GM posi units for G bodies got snatched up and now we are basically buying $1000 Monte Carlo/ Buick GN hand me downs or going $2000 and hopping over to Moser and the specialists. You can stuff a nice Auburn unit into your stock rear unit and choose your ratio and know the rear end will fit.

I would run that posi. GM had two posi units, One is a Auburn cone style and one is a eaton Gov-lok style. Any one of them would be a good upgrade over the stock one wheel peel. Youll need one with 26 axle splines from a pre 1988 S10/15, Camaro/firebird, also GM minni vans.

The complete S10 rear end will not bolt in to a G-body, Becouse the S10 uses leave springs and the G-body uses coil springs. The S10 Carriers (posi) with 26 spline axles will bolt in to the G-body rear end. The Gears from all the S10's will bolt into the G-body rearend if used with the right carrier. ( 2 series and 3 series). Doug

Thanks for the info

This thread caught my eye when I posted my 3.73 posi for sale.
I am going back to the elcamino's original rearend I kept in storage.

The 3.73 really woke up the '85 elcamino with 700R4 and mild goodwrench 350. I can easily break traction through the first 3 gears. But at 64 years old I am going to start conserving rubber.

With this thread's info, I'm considering a mid-range ratio S-10 carrier for my stock 2.41 if I can find one for a reasonable price at the bone yard.
