ok, so the other day i drove my 81 el camino to the store and back before work. it drove just fine with no warnings of any sort. an hour later left for work and just around the corner from my house she stalled out and would not crank back over. the engine would turn and turn and turn but not crank. I checked for spark and had no spark. had the coil and module test and both were good but still no spark. so i swapped out the entire distributor with the one from my 305 getting ready to go in.(currently a 229 original engine under the hood.) i just placed the V6 componetes on top (cap, rotor, module, and coil). now i have spark and the engine was brought to tdc when i dropped in the new distributor. but she still will not crank and my electronic carb pukes excess fuel like it is flooding its self. any ides?

i had the same carb issue once, the charcoal canister went bad and filled the carb with the charcoal and kept the float down.. you need to see what is causeing the carb to flood.did you replace the entire dist or just parts? did it have spark when re installed.did you check the carbon button in the cap?

Welcome to the site, Ron. Sounds like you have two distinct issues.
The carb flooding could be 1) too much fuel pressure ( only an issue if you've recently installed a HP fuel pump. 2) Dirt stuck in the float pin, keeping the pin from seating. 3) Float itself is saturated with fuel, and is keeping the pin open. 4) Continued cranking , pumping the peddle trying to start, will cause it to flood as well. #3 or #4 is the most likely, #3 especially if it hasn't been replaced. The no spark sounds like an electronic module issue. Even though they test good, they can still become intermittent. When I have mine tested, I always ask them to test it 4-5 times, so they get hot. Also, be sure to install the module with Heat Sink compound ( not dielectric grease). Also make sure the coil ground loop is in place. If electronic module is good, ECM could be bad, or the connections to the ECM could be loose. Have you pulled any codes?

i changed the fuel filter the day before it stalled out. and when it would turn but not crank i discovered no spark and swapped the entire distributor which allowed me to have spark. and thats when it started puking fuel without out pumping the pedal. just everytime you turn the key.

i'd say check the timing first,,
but?? would the v6 and a v8 reluctor and phasing be the same??

i think?? because i dont know for sure???? (i dont know nuttin about v6's)
you would have to change the distributer shaft/reluctor and pickup coil,, maybe the module?? to the odd fire v6 stuff for it to work right??? heres a thread that talks about it some.. ![]() hope that helps a little.. Quote:
