Careful of those Goodwrench crate motors. i purchased two a zz 3 and and recent zz4 350 complete, however I got it the same time GM was under a bailout . I cant prove it but two intake valves had sugar packets banded too them and after the initial run in bent a few pushrods ....

NO! GM performance Crates are a complete different division of GM. More money and made in USA or assembled in USA I am sure there are jobbed out parts ????, I believe that all of the Good Wrench engines are made in Mexico and are refurbished and new full production line engine, where all the GM Performance are all new and tighter specs with had assembly.
REALLY BIG DIFFERENCE AND WELL WORTH IT UNLESS YOU ARE AND ENGINE BUILDER OR USE A PERFORMANCE ENGINE BUILDER.

305's respond to the same upgrades 327's 350's and 383 respond to.....
Airflow improvement, compression ratio, induction, exhaust upgrades etc. I have one in my '81 with 111,000 miles and you wouldn't know it's a 305. I "dogged" 305's until I bought this car and learned not all of them are dogs!! |

While that's true that airflow improvement is key, 305 have a very small bore compared to the 4" in the other engines you mentioned. It's hard to fit large valve high flowing heads without shrouding the valves. Can it be made fast? Sure, anything can with enough money and know how. Is it the best choice? That's what the owner has to decide.
