i got tired of constantly airing up shocks, bought new ones, air leaks galore. Bumming around a local Pull a Part, i found a Buick station wagon that had heavy duty coil springs, i also got a nice pair from the rear of a Chevy Caprice Classic. Installed both and decided on the heavy duty springs. Raised the rear end up 2 1/2 inches. My 83 SS now has the stance i was looking for. Next to go in is a pair of gas shocks for a softer ride.

I found a nice cheap cure for sagging rears on El Caminos and all G body cars, go to a local junk yard, find a 1980 or newer Buick, Oldsmobile or Chevy Station wagon or full size Chevy Caprice. Get the real coil springs and install them. I found a pair of heavy duty coils on a Buick wagon. Lifted the rear up where it belongs. I also got coild from a Caprice Classic. they look like they offer a softer ride but i needed coil spring compressors to install. Took me not more than an hour to install, cheaper than air bags and shocks that air up one day and sag the next. Most El Caminos came from the factory with 14 inch wheels and tires, thats why all GM muscle cars sag in the back, no one thought to order heavy rear suspension back then.

Placed my order for the airbags and set of shocks from Summit Racing. Hopefully they will arrive at the same time as my springs that I ordered. Will be changing everything at one time this weekend. I never noticed how stiff my airshocks were until I read about it on this post. I just assumed thats how it was supposed to ride. Gotta love the information thats on this site.\

I just installed Moog Cargo coils on my 84 today, Took about 15 min on the lift, two nuts to drop the shocks and then pop the old springs out and stick the new springs in. Once the vehicle was back on the ground the rear ride height had gone up exactly 1"
That is perfect for my car. I have not drove it yet but I am sure I will love the increased load carrying capacity. I paid about $70 at Carquest for the pair of springs. Oh yeah they are made in USA too. |

Well, gotta say that I am impressed with the shipping time once I ordered my airbags and springs. Total two (2) days from the date of order till it showed up at my house. The airbags little simple enough to install; HOWEVER, the "rear" shocks that ordered looked suspicously like "front" shocks. Probably because that is what they sent instead of rears They did quickly send me a UPS label via email and stated that they would cover the cost of replacement shocks as well as the shipping for the units I will be sending back. Now my question to all reading this; I need a rear shock for a 85 El Camino. Ive seen something about KYB's and "QA1" ( I think??) and even "Drag Shocks". Not carving canyons or racing/launching the car. Just want a nice smooth ride and something that will definitely compliment my NEW "soon to be installed" airbags and coil springs outback. Thanks again to all that can refer a name/brand of a rear shock (non-air type). Aloha'z

Tell them it is an 85 Gran National Buick - any of the G bodies will fit. It is just a matter of picking what you want from there.
