Default Starter noise

My 1986 El Camino with 350 sb starter is clashing with the flex plate. I have a 153 tooth flex plate no weight. I replaced the flex plate have replaced the startor new connectors and new startor bolts. Why is it still grinding?

usually ther are instructions with a new starter AND shims the idea is to be able to insert a straightened paper clip in the space between the flywheel and starter gears, thusly using the shims your starter is technically dropped down to allow clearence .....supposedly !!

This sounds like what I deat with for almost a year! Are you using a stock starter?
Have you pulled the starter gear out to see if its getting an even bite on the flexplate?

Google how to shim the starter as this is a very necessary thing to do. WP
