I swaped for a 350 in my 1987 305. Cam, carbs, etc really do not make that much difference. Put in a $100 HEI distributor with vacuum advance, 1985 Rochester TRUCK Carb and you will be very please as I was. If you have lots of time and money go ahead and play with all the mentioned above. There are alot of good postings on what I have done. Fire me off an email if you want more details.

PS: suggest you forget the headers. Original iron castings are fine and you avoid alot of problems like cracks, bad fit, etc

Wow, you guys are getting way ahead of me.

I don't want to get a new engine and port it or recam it etc. I am looking for something I can drop in with little to no effort and cruise around. Looking to get somewhere in the 300-350 hp range out of it. About the same on torque. Decent mileage would be a bonus, not like I am going to ride it everyday although it was my daily driver for a few years. Just want it to sound mean and have a little ooph to it.

Cheers.

No one has mentioned the GM crate 350 330 HO with Vortec Heads 19210007. Base motor is $2875 (you would need an intake) It has 9.1:1 compression

this is a GOOD motor - it's essentially the same block with iron vortec heads (64cc which brings your compression up), it has a good cam profile, one piece main seal, roller cam and roller tip rockers.

I should have warned you I started the same exact type of thread a year ago and even stated at the top "DAILLY DRIVER" and within an hour I had $10,000.00 worth of motor and no idea of what their we talking about hands down this is the best group I ever met and my truck hasn't seen a mechanic yet.

$1469.00 plus $26.00 for the manifold 305/350-260hp all other parts off my old engine=100hp extra I was told.

it was funnier than hell I just sat back and listened till it ballooned and was told now you need the tranny to match so I put up the "DAILY DRIVER" issue again. So it took me a year to get up the nerve to attempt asking about swapping a new motor.

Getting closer to finding a motor. Would a standard turbo 350 handle the horsepower of a 383?

OK. I have been giving it so thought and I think I may go full bore with a 355 blueprint longblock. The t350 might not handle the 420hp 383 I want to put in it so I might have to settle for only 380hp. Its colder than hell up here so I will think on it till it is somewhat warm.

If I had the money I would go with the RamJet 350, and have Fuel injectioned engine.

I have read mixed reviews on blueprint engines. If you are referring to the zz383 as the 420hp engine, you wight look up the HT383 by gm. It is a tamed down version with iron heads and gobs of low-end torque. Still has forged crank if i remember it right. Was designed as a towing engine, so you won't need to wind it out like a 380 hp 355 to really feel it.
