Default Bypass regulator no return line

So I just installed a holley blue pump and regulator on my 350. The regulator randomly makes a buzzing clicking noise. Loud enough that I can barely hear the pump itself. I'd like to run a return style regulator to see if it helps but my tank doesn't have a return line. Could I plumb the return into a T before the pump?

Well right now I'm running the stock one that came with the pump which is a dead head regulator. If I can run a return without going all the back to the tank ill look into a quality bypass unit. I actually called the holley tech line to see if the noise was normal and he said no. So I figure if I'm going to replace the regulator I might as well make it a return system so the pump doesn't work so hard

I'm pretty sure any return line needs to go back to the tank and not teed into the line somewhere between the pump and tank.

the holley regulators work fine,,
but
the pump should be at the tank,, or as close as possible,,
electric pumps pump, they dont pull fuel very well at all,, they cavitate/ make noise..

The pump is about a foot from the tank and below the lowest part of the tank. It's not the pump I hear its the regulator

That is strange. The loudest pump I ever had was a Holley blue. Similar experiences with every other Holly blue pump owner throuought the years. They don't siphon well as should be expected with a non-priming pump but I never had issues with one being mounted lower or higher. Just don't be far away. I have heard of people using the vent line as a return or teeing into the filler neck with some hardware store piercing-fittings (sounds a little jickey to me). I plubed my return line through the sending unit (simply because it was easier to remove and sweat the steel line into plus it looked more professional) I used my factory feed lines as the return lines when I converted to efi. Talk about running backwards huh?

Well I do know from oter syles of regulators that when they go bad (spring gets weak) they will make all kinds of goofy noises usually a humming but that is usually also accompaines by a rapidly pulsing pressure gague. Sometimes it will be 7-8 lbs (efi or air pressure) but carbureted I'm not shure. Sound farmiliar?

And don't take this as an insult (I worked at a speed shop for some years) check the basics. Is it installed the correct flow direction?

The flow is correct. I have it set at 6 psi right now and it does fluctuate about .5 psi. It does hum all the time and when it starts clicking it sounds like the check ball bouncing off the seat. I guess I'll try a new regulator. So there's no way to run a return regulator without adding a return line at the tank correct?

any chance you have some vapor locking going on there??
any chance the in tank strainer is plugged??

lots of cars running your setup without problems,,
could be something wrong with the regulater,, there purty simple tho??
i'm rumming a black pump with the same reg. and no noises..

try lowering the pressure and see if it helps?? it should still run fine at 4-5 psi..
i have my pump inlet level with the tank outlet (out the top) to keep it short..

if you run the return line back to the pump inlet,, you will heat the fuel up,,
also hard to get air out of the system..

I had a Holley "Blue" pump on my '77 Elco for years, with no regulator, feeding A Holley carb, with no problems.
