It's an adjustment problem. Sort of. They come on just as you move out of Park, but if you go all the way into reverse, they go off again. Keep in mind this is a 200-4r transplant, so that's probably one problem. Is there way to adjust the shifter? I know how to adjust the switch. That doesn't solve the problem.

Drill a hole in the middle of the dash and wire them up to a big ol toggle switch

You should be able loosen the retaining screws on both sides and get the adjustment you need, perhaps block the wheels, put the selector in reverse, loosen the screws and just slightly move it one way or the other, might help to have someone at the back end watching, then tighten the screws before moving the selector back into park.
Be sure the lights are not illuminated in any other position. You may be able to file off some of the insert so they don't come on as soon also. There also may be space to adjust on the linkage where it attaches to the selector ratchet on the transmission If they come on just out of Park it is close. This one isn't held in by screws, or that might work. It just has tabs that fit in holes on the sides of the column tube. It's self-adjusting, which means that every time you put it in low or park, it adjusts.

You know, out of my 30+ years here in Dallas I've never had someone check my back up lights at an inspection. If they had and as you say they will come on just at certain spots, I'd get in and just so the dude he wasn't doing it right.
Now that being said that don't mean you don't want them to work. I don't think they should (self adjust) the switch shouldn't move without you adjusting it. You might find something small and stick on the tab that the lever hits and see if you can fine the perfect size to activate for you. Then glue it to it?? ![]() Donny

I think DDD is correct, once the switch is in place is should not move.

Just bring it to me and I'll take care of getting it inspected.
