Default Les' 65 El Camino Project

I've been looking for a 65 for years - basically, since I sold the one I bought new in 65.

I just bought this one in Sacramento. It was a towing lien sale and is rougher than the first pictures would indicate. I haven't brought it back to Texas yet. It's currently stored in my best friend's warehouse while I collect parts and form a game plan.

Currently:

Engine: Small block - vintage unknown. No serial number on the block.

Transmission: TH350

Rear End: 10 Bolt. Specs unknown but, it's not a posi.

Suspension: Appears to be stock.

Exterior: the body lines are straight and there is no apparent rust in the usual places (That was the final motivator to buy it - that and a good price). Both bumpers will have to be replaced. The left fender will be replaced. Both that and the hood are damaged and, probably, repairable but, I will replace them if I can find replacements for a reasonable price. The IDEAL situation would be to find a good El Camino or Chevelle front clip within driving distance of North Texas.

Interior: A total mess. The floor is rusted through and patched with fiberglass behind the passenger seat. Some PO apparently converted it to a four speed and then converted it back and patched the big hole in the floor with fiberglass. I may be looking at replacing the whole floor pan. Doing a lot of reading and watching You Tube to educate myself on the process.

The Preliminary Plan:

Drive train: LS2, 4L60 and 12 Bolt

Suspension: Complete clean up and painting plus replacement of steering components, ball joints and bushings front-to-back.

Brakes: Four wheel disks using S10 blazer spindles and C5/6 Corvette calipers and disks.

Interior: New; carpet, door panels, headliner etc. 5th Gen bucket seats, 68-72 console & shifter, power windows and locks. Maybe Vintage Air and Dakota Digital - depending on the budget.

Les, I have used these guys in the past with good results.
Easy to deal with, if nothing else get a catalog, hey it never hurts to have an extra catalog.

Probably not keeping the wheels. I'm a "Torque Thrust II" fan. This is about how I envision it ending up - but the color being Corvette Crystal Red.

That is funny. Here's a link to his build story. I'm already collecting parts - including the Bonneville mirrors. http://www.chevelles.com/feature/january2002.html

There's also a kit that eliminates the wind wings. I think it would look great but, I've read a couple of comments that you can't drive with the window down without the wind blowing you glasses off your face. http://www.onepieceproducts.com/Prod...E%202D%20SEDAN That may take a little more consideration.
