Exclamation El Camino 60th year anniversary

2019 will mark the 60th year anniversary of the El Camino.

I propose that the NECOA plan a huge event maybe in the central United States like Kansas City.

We could show the cars, have a swap meet, etc. Its just an idea for now but what do you think!

One huge rally/gathering of El Caminos and Caballero/Sprint vehicles. Thanks Geno

Thanks very much for starting this Thread, Gene. I have added a poll to gauge the interest among our membership, to find out where that interest may be concentrated, and where the direction of the project may be vested. (The active Chevrolet truck plants in the Central U.S. seem to be in Wentzville, MO, Arlington, TX, and near Detroit, MI.) We'll need commitments from members who will not shy away from the work needed to make this effort a success. The good news is that we have 2+ years to pull this off - the bad news is that we have JUST 2+ years to pull this off. You'll be seeing a lot of posts and other threads in the coming days, so please follow along, but be patient with the progress in the beginning. We need to get this right - and we will...............Ken

I'll have to check my schedule, but I think I'm busy that day.

This actually sounds like a real cool idea.

Maybe it can coincide with a larger event or something.

The first Caminos were built in the Saint Louis Plant. How about something there? Not sure how I would get me decrepit 59 all the way to Missouri but, it sure would be fun if GM through us a bone and hyped it as well. Could be a massive event.

St. Louis was the first choice but I thought Kansas City was more centralized. I know they had a plant at Leeds but the idea of the first ones being built at St. Louis rings well with me. We need to contact GM and see if they could help setting something up with the NECOA who represents all the Elky/Sprint/Caballero models. This would give us a lot of help with registering new members and growing the NECOA. Great idea Mr. Fin. Thanks Geno

Most 85,86,87 El Caminos were built in Mexico . To verify this , the first number of your VIN should be a 3 . USA is 1 , Canada is 2.So if your VIN starts with a 3 it was made in Amos Arizpe, Mexico. Code S .If you have a 1 or 2 ,This may be rare . OK I just googled it & they said ALL 85 & newer El Caminos were built in Mexico , what year is yours ?

I believe this is a darn good idea and we need someone or members to contact GM to get some help. Also some companies for sponsorship and I think GM would love to get the publicity for their vehicles in general. I started this idea but I'm needing help, a bunch of help so if you want to help out in anyway let's do this. The NECOA/ECC is probably one of the largest car clubs in the world and this could put us over the top. If we can do this we need to have meet and greets in every state and country to get the word out and support for the NECOA/ECC now. Thanks Geno

Thumbs up GREAT Idea - and THANKS, Gene

I love the idea, and thanks, Gene, for thinking ahead. I seem to be stuck in 2017 trying to find additional leaders so I may prepare to take us into 2019 and beyond. The location of any National event will be critical to it's success, and we could find ourselves in competition with the U.S. GM Nationals in Carlisle, PA, for GM affiliation with a 60th Anniversary event. Carlisle hosted the 50th Anniversary of the El Camino, as they have for the Corvette and other GM models. If any member has a contact within GM who could provide a starting point, I will gladly try to establish a dialog to make this event happen. Or, if appropriate, I could delegate this task to a volunteer with my full support.

If we take the bold step of scheduling this event, my leadership search becomes even more critical - in a line from Missouri north, and to the east and west of that line are entire Regions without leaders: Michigan, Indiana, & Kentucky - Region 9; Illinois, Wisconsin, & Minnesota - Region 10; Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, & North Dakota - Region 11; and Colorado, Utah, Montana, & Wyoming - Region 16, are all without leaders. Add those to the following: Tennessee, Alabama, & Georgia - Region 7; Arizona and New Mexico - Region 15; and Nevada - Region 17, all without leaders. The bottom line is that we are, at this point in time, ill prepared to take on an event of National significance. I'm not saying it cannot be done, but a project of this dimension will need to call upon all resources around North America and possibly beyond. And the absence of leadership in 40 percent of the U.S. may be very detrimental to a successful event. Now can any members see why I'm putting an effort into filling leadership positions? The success of our Association in whole has to be based upon activities in each region. Small events, shows, meetings or other gatherings build to larger and larger events. We cannot build larger events without building up interest from the success of smaller events, and so on. I've not been on my soapbox the last few months for no reason. We need leadership in place to be successful in general - not just for a National event!

It has been my dream for 7 years to host a National event of El Caminos - but we've never achieved the saturation of leadership that I've believed was necessary to accomplish that dream. Maybe starting to plan an event of this magnitude will pull at the hearts of some leaders-in-waiting, and lead them to step up and volunteer for the Association that's given so much to so many of us. There are no specific numbers of posts or years as a member as obstacles to your becoming a leader in the NECOA. Contact me – tell me who you are and why you can be a leader. You may be very surprised what we can accomplish working together toward a common goal! My eMail remains - kenrogers1@sbcglobal.net - for private communications or comments..............Ken

Great idea! What about Las Vegas for a place to hold the event. Cheap hotels. And what if we got a car television show involved to build a coustom El Camino and raffle it off. The TV coverage of the build will promote the event.
