Jim hasn't logged-in in over a year, so we may never know??
if the smell comes out of the AC vents, maybe check the blower motor too..
I've only had m '87 since last September, but I would sometimes notice that also on startup. Seeing this thread it occurs to me I don't think it's happened since I replaced the blower motor. I did that because I had an issue with it not working on high, and the issue was a melted wire/connector (the one with 4 wires that's right above the pass side valve cover), where others indicated that the fan was drawing too much power; so I re-wired and replaced the motor to avoid that in the future.
does it smell like rotten eggs or plastic burnen they got to be more descryptive
ac clutches will be hot and glowing smokin
grouned hot wires or fusable link will smell weird doesnt smell same as melting wires squeezing them with fingers will feel crunchy if going smell like a mastic
some times ac will blow out musty smell one time guy at work stuffed a carp into bosses ac heater vent as realy bad joke LOL
he had me fill the guys ac vents with red chalk that dies skin took 3 weeks
for it to wear off lol
fusable links are between batery and starter
If it only happens on a cold start, I'd be looking at the choke. If too rich, it'll stink of "rotten eggs" until the choke opens and the mixture leans out. The mid 80's cars with carburetors and catalytic converters were notorious for this.
