New El Camino owner here! It's a 1979 that a friend tipped me off to. She saw it with a forsale sign in a trailer park. It took a couple months of back-and-forth texting before I could meet with the owner, but when I finally saw it, I bought it on the spot.

It's got a 360 that runs strong, and a Turbo 350 trans that is stuck in high gear.

But it was the interior that sold me.

I've got an LS1 out of a 2000 Corvette, and a 4L60E from a 1998 Camaro with 38K miles. Also Camaro radiator and fans, new Spectra fuel tank and sender and pump, motor mounts and trans crossmember, and I think all of the other little items I'll need. But I have this new job that's taking up all my time, plus lots of travel coming up. It may be a while until I can start wrenching on it, but I am really looking forward to that. And to driving it.

I've found lots of good info here, and I'll post up when I start working on it.

Thanks everybody for the welcome. I'm keeping the blue camo for now. One of my friends said it looks like it should be in the parking lot at a gay rodeo. I sort of like it a little bit. If it had a nice interior I wouldn't want to change it, but I think the stock interior is sort of dated. This way I can do anything to it, and it will be an improvement.

For now, though, I'm focused on the engine swap. Every time I start thinking about replacing the body mount bushings, or going through the front suspension, or putting in power windows, or putting discs on the rear, I just think "focus on the engine swap". So far it's working.

I just finished my previous project, which was an LT1 engine into a Jaguar XJS. It took eight years. I really don't want to make this El Camino into the same thing. So I'm gathering all of the pieces ahead of time, and hopefully I can do it in a month-long thrash (or less). I figure the clock starts when I pull the old engine, and stops when I drive the car with the new engine. The last big thing to do before I start work is convert the wiring harness.

Dave , Sounds like you have a great project going and we hope that you will come out and play El Camino with us . There are a number of very active members in your area that would welcome you joining them for a local event or get together . Lots of knowledge in the group that hopefully can help answer some questions you may have as you do the build and info is just a click away on the site with the Search Feature . We just did the Cars Of Dreams/Hospice Show last weekend near you in Palm Beach and are presently discussing our next event at the Super Chevy Show or another to be chosen in the area of Palm Beach April 21 and 22 . We would love for you to join us either with or without your Camino as some members do . We welcome all daily drivers , show cars , works in progress and beaters , so I`m sure you will fit in

Would be great to meet you guys. I think I'm out of town the April 21-22 weekend, but will be there if I'm not. I've been using the search feature a lot, and I've learned a lot of stuff. Current goal is to get the El Camino on the road and driveable to LS Fest in Kentucky in September.
