Default '79- speedo "chirping" noise- suggestions?

My '79 Royal Knight with cruise control has a speedometer issue. The speedo makes a very noticeable and annoying chirping or rubbing sound that gets quicker as road speed increases. It gets quiet occasionally at highway speeds, and is noisier in cold weather. Before I dive in again and take the dash apart to look for causes, has anyone else absolutely found the cause? To me, it seems to be coming from inside the speedometer gauge itself, I don't think it's the cable. I've gotten used to turning up the stereo a bit, but others going for a ride hear it and ask, "what's that noise?". I really want to solve this for good, and I posted here a while ago and thought I'd try again.

Ernie's probably right on the money...or else you have a lil birdy living behind your gauge cluster! The gauge cluster is not hard to remove, take it out, disconnect the speedo cable and try liberally spraying inside the cable with some WD-40 (with the tube provided) to see if that'll stop it.

I've had the same problem with speedometer cables in the past. I never had a lot of luck on lubricating them. I usually wound up getting a whole new cable. I'd give the lube a shot first as it's a lot cheaper.

I had the same problem in my '80 Elco. I ended up just replacing the speedo cable with a new one because I didn't want to have to tear apart the dash a second time.

I have in the past used spray lithium grease on a couple different vehicles. It comes with a spray tube that you can poke down the speedo cable, and is thicker than WD-40, so it might get you better results.

Sometimes, as with mine, it the plastic gears at the end of the cable and in the speedo. They wear down and look like "apple-core".

Especially if the needle is bouncing.

The cable gear is an easy fix, the speedo is not.

Good luck,

Elky77

hey im pretty sure i have the same exact problem.. couple years ago my dad crashed the elky into a pound.. dont know why lol.. but it started since then.. the chirpping noise going on and off behind the left side of the dash like the gauge idk *** it is it pisses me off and i blast my music to meanwhile i should be listening to the nice engine.. ive never been behind the dash so i have no idea what the speedo cable is? and why i would lubricate it.. anyone have a picture or can anyone explain where to tackle the screws first and so forth like a walk through.. pleaseee! OH and now the speedo needle looks like its shaking a little.. not when i accelerate but when i cruise..

Most likely a large-wet pound.

My ELKO starting chirping and the needle starting (bounceing), in less than a week the speedometer needle broke off! And that all happened after I removed the cluster and cleaned everything up. My advise fix it as soon as possible because one bad thing can lead to something much worse! If your going to turn up the music you better be playing sad songs.
Thanks
Donny

They do make a speedometer cable lube and it is available at PeP Boys, but WD-40 is also good.

I've always used LubriPlate white grease on speedo cables and tach cables on both cars and bikes. Never had to do one twice.

It's a '79 Royal Knight specific problem. The spring in the dynamic allan spectrum provides a time frequency variance.
