Default spilsh splash i was taking an oil bath

after several oil changes done at home and droping either nut from oil pan, the wrench, or the oil filter or the filter wrench into the pan of used oil making big mess, i decided "to improve" the at home system. my first attempt was to use an old screen door screen over the top of drain pan, lol, heres where the oil bath part comes in, it actually worked but the webbing was way to fine causing the dreaded splatter factor, so plan b went into effect, rabbit wire, better results, but still some splashing, plan c, chicken wire, bingo worked like a charm, i used sheet metal screws with washers to attach the wire to plastic drain pan. now i cant wait to see this idea on late-night cable channels as the ronco-matic oil changing system only $29.95.

I think you're trying to reinvent the wheel. Why not just use an oil drain container like this http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...o-20/ref=nosim

I bought an oil change pan from Wally World for ~$6, has an 8" opening with a plastic grill, a cap that screws over the opening for transport to the recycler and a 1" capped opening for emptying.

wasnt trying to reinvent anything, im nowhere near a town or parts store, and already had a a used oil pan and the wire on hand, rather than clutter up the garage with 2 pans i made use of what was on hand.

Leo, i've had an oil catch can just like the one in the picture (from Snap-on) and it workd perfectly. A place to put the used filter, no splashing and you can store and pore the used oil easily. Just like zxman I like to recycle stuff (mostly because I'm cheap) but sometimes storebought is better.

Default oil burners

Do any of you burn your oil. Moding a wood burner with a slow drip oil input over an old junk head works great for heating and removing the burden of disposal.

I'll bet the EPA would fine you for burning old engine oil that way. You know they fined a little ol lady in Florida for using gasoline to edge her lawn.

For the last 8 or so years I've been using the store bought one with the 8" opening, it's flat, fits good but.............

It has no accommodation for the filter, I generally get an "Arm" flow of oil when I take the filter loose and about 1/4 of the time I'll tilt that sucker enough to have waste oil on me or the driveway or both. No matter how I position that silly oil catch thing it never will catch what is coming out with the filter.
