I'll take a shot at this.
1: chevy motor div
36: custom
80: 2 door sedan pickup
9: 1969
B: Built in Baltimore
306177: I believe is sequence #

If I screwed up someone will correct me.

The cowl tag someone else will have to look up. I do not have a book to decode.

Brian

P.S. According to my understanding, in order to get an SS a custom had to be ordered. Then emblems would be put on. Don't hold me to that I'm still a little confused on that one. Except for the 68 model, Chevy made a stantard, custom, and SS from the factory.

I thought this was familar. This VIN and body tag are for sale on ebay along with what is pictured as a 1970 El Camino SS basket case.

That vin and body tag are for a 1969 El Camino, not a 1970.

wow!!! thanks for the info, why would there be 69 tags on this car... could it had been a screw up at the plant? after all 1970 vehicles were being assembled in september of 69 for release in 70>>> the rivets on the cowl and dash did not seem that they were ever tampered with and the hole car from the 3 circle dash to rear end are a 1970 el camino.. thanks for everones help.....

There is no way Chevrolet mistagged the truck, it would have never made it out of the plant, too many checks and balances for that to ever happen. They shut the plants down for model year change over in July, so there was a month in between the end of the 69 run and the beginning of the 70 model year. VIN plates and rivets were regulated by federal law.

Someone else did that, maybe to conceal a stolen vehicle years ago..or this is really a 1969 that somone added a 1970 front clip and dash to (most likely). 1968 to 72 were pretty much the same body shell from cab back with different front clips, trim and interiors.

fyi
You know its legal to sell a VIN tag? Not a body tag. There are Chevelle guru's that watch ebay for vin tags and body tags to come for sale and they document that info in case they ever show up on a car in the future, they will ba able to prove fraud. More and more buyers are getting screwed with bogus VIN's. One guy I am aware of lost nearly $26g on such a car so far that turned out to be stolen about 10 yrs back. The seller whom sold it to him was to go to trial this past week. While the VIN on the dash is visible, the vehicle had hidden VIN stamped on the body and frame that will reveal the real car. Its got so bad that a law firm in PA is now specializing in these cases.

I guess they added the front end of a 70 on it, or maybe it got smacked up?? well thanks once again for shedding some light on the situation..As for the tags being for sale...false... the hole car is actually for sale on ebay, it is a shame to crush the poor thing so i thought maybe someone would be interested in what parts that are left or to try and restore it. She is pretty rough though. The legal and illegal thing with the tags and vins im sure has probably been going on for longer then any of us know's, but in one department where mopar had somewhat of a leg up on chevrolet ( wash my mouth out for saying that and please forgive me ) is that on all mopars from around 62-63 and up the last 6 digits of there vins are stamped in three places.. firewall, radiator support and trunk lip. thanks again
