Default LS1 Engine installation in 87 El Camino Conquisa -- HELP

Will a Chevy LS1 engine fit in a 1987 El Camino Conquista without making modifications? Would appreciate hearing from anyone who has experience in this area.

You'll need to notch the front cross member to clear the oil pan. That's been done before, check other LS1 threads in this forum for info.
Also you'll need high pressure fuel pump and return line from the pressure regulator.
And you need to figure out how to supply power to the computer, and where to mount it. Computers are sensitive to voltage, so I used the ignition switch to control a relay to feed the computer instead of feeding it straight from the ignition switch.
I don't recall seeing anything in this forum about a radiator fan, but you'll need an electric one since the LS1 doesn't have a fan belt.

That's the main stuff, then there are a bunch of smaller bits. Browse the forum for info. Also try Ls1.com web site.

it may be possible to swap wiothout cutting the xmember. there are some production pans out there that may work. I know for a fact the alpha 5.3 Hummer pan works on s10's.

try ls1tech.com and hit up "g-body". I'm over there too.

I believe that some of the LS setups used a self regulated pump so there was no need for a return line. Not sure if they are interchangable though. I have also read of nightmares with getting the factory accessories to clear the frame, I guess it depends what vehicle the engine is coming out of. Definitely would be a cool swap though.

Go to John Bzdel's site. http://home.earthlink.net/~bzdel/ I bought his motor mounts and oilpan mod. He proved his work by drag racing his engine change.I did notch the cross member so i could run the air con pump in its stock acessory drive location.I went with a Corvette fuel filter/pressure regulator so a short return is required.

oil pan motor mounts and cross member i have 85 elco and its done with 13" vette disc brakes

cutting the crossmember is not the way to go.. We are just finishing installing a 2000 corvette into my 87 Elky. We used an oil pan off a cts v caddy and it has worked fine.
The motor mounts came from holly. The computer was mounted on the fender-well on the passenger side.
We used the wiring harness that came with the motor out of Bristol pa. Also the gas pedal.
Did have to change the gas tank and fuel pump. I hope to post pictures soon..
I purchased a new aluminum radiator to get the fresh look.
Trans was from a 2005 Colorado, had to change the bell housing and input shaft

My son and I put an LS1 out of a 2000 Z28 in an 1983 Conquista it is a tight fit. the Caddy oil pan is the way to go. We mounted the computer to the passanger side fender well. I wish we had spen more time and put the computer in the cab where the original one was. we also used the manual six speed and it get around 22 mpg.

Horsepower on the powerblock did a LS1 install on a 88 Monte Carlo SS , i would check that out first to see what they did

I finally got some pictures posted on the 2000 LS1 Corvette installed into my 87 Elky. I did not cut anything. CTS-V oil pan did the trick. I changed the AC unit so it would make it easier to hook up and service. The shop that did the work suggested this and I'm glad that we did it that way because of thr final product. Check it out in my garage........Good luck with your swap! Do check out John's threads though because he is the one that inspired me. In fact I gave the garage all my coraspondence with John from a few years back when I first started planning my change over. I'm glad that I bit the bullet... The car is a fantasic driver. My next project is a Corvette LS7 into a 62 vette. Looking at new frames now.

I know this thread is old, but there is a sticky on ls1tech in the conversions/hybrids section that lists the dimensions of all the ls oil pans. I notched my crossmember because I already had the f-body pan. 98-02 f-body longtubes will fit but some modification is required to one tube on the passenger side, either dent it or cut a section about a foot long out and weld a new piece in. You can run a belt driven fan if you use a truck water pump, but I'm not sure how centered it will be on the radiator. I used a single puller fan off of a ford taurus the cfm on those fans is better than most dual aftermarket setups. Also checkout speedway motors for wiring harness, they have a reasonably priced harness that is simple plug and play and works great I've used them on two different ls swaps. Stock 98-02 fbody radiator will work, I'm using a griffen. I mounted the ecu inside the cabin with the speedway harness and had plenty of wire for it to reach.
