Default interior resto-mod

started my interior resto last nite, installed new carpet from trim parts inc. went well fit good with just normal trimming and tugging. was worth the extra money, used no name on buick whoo what a pain!! started dyeing interior with sem vynil in can works well if prepped right, although i had some uv damage but a pocket knife took care of that ! [scraped off dry stuff then lightly sanded with400 grit, then wiped with acetone then sprayed them] turned out alright... anywhoo my qwestion is other than purchasing a headliner [previos owner tore out whole interior other than seats] does anyone know a slick way to build one ? all of the "donors" at local yards are gone or dust.... dont really wanna go the fiberglass routine, has anyone tried foam or foam board? figured you could carve em... will post pics tonite or tommorow have some good [well i think so lol] ideas.... V

If you can find a good headliner board. They make a recover kit for it!

There's all kinds of options. You could use 1/8" HDF or masonite, or that cardboard stuff used for door panels. I've also heard of people using ABS plastic. I believe RodDoors uses ABS for their door panels and headliners. Then like PaPa John said, throw a recover kit on it or you could wrap it yourself in your choice of material. The foam idea sounds interesting too though...

Use the old board (if good) and recover it. I'm not a 4th owner...but I imagine the 4th gen board is styrofoam and it was pressed into shape, similarly to that of a 5th gen. Using a flat board (no matter what it's made of) just doesn't work as good, because it doesn't have those curves pressed into it. If an aftermarket ABS board is made for 4th gen Elkys, and you plan on keeping your Elky for all eternity, then spend the extra money and go with the ABS board...you may still have to recover it...but the ABS board itself will still last much longer than a styrofoam board...they crack. You'd be surprised how easy it is to recover a board whether it be the OEM (usable) board or an ABS plastic board.

8O Oh...that suxs...see I learned something new today. I can replace my headliner in about 2 hrs now, plus the time it takes for the 3M glue to dry...see I knew there was some logical reason why I liked 5th gens better.

ok heres some pics of interior so far http://elcaminocentral.com/gallery-a...als-page2.html
some of the ideas for the speaker box were modified from drawing from another thread, thx !!
covered a donor back trim piece with carpet [if you dont have apolstery stapler get one they are handy !!]
bent some brackets to mount a piece of brushed aluminum for future amp mounting [if you plan right and leave wire access holes all wires can be hidden..] then with a little care glued carpet [3m super trim adhesive] on the bottom expozed metal.
carved a piece of foam to fill remainder then covered with carpet
i did have to remove a bracket that i assume was for jack...
ended up boxing 6x9 speakers after making front panel [it has a flange on 2 sides for mounting] i found some door clips left over from the buick ,they snapped right in the slots for the velcro mounts !! [u could also use fuzzy tree clips just as easily]
if anyones interested ill take more detailed pics...
havent got to the headliner yet but its next !! thinkin overhead console any opinons? V
ps now gotta build box for 2 10" subs...
