Default noisy speedo

1986 Caballero V/6. I seem to have a "spinning" sound coming from the speedo, it doesn't happen all the time and the needle is slow to return to zero. One mechanic told me I need either a new head or a new sending cable. The speedo is accurate and always registers. Ideas???
Thanks!

Sounds like maybe the cable needs some lubrication. You can pull the inner cable out of its sleeve & put some moly lube on it .Then reinsert cable.
