Hello all,
First time here and already have a question. I am looking to buy a camino tomarrow the owner is a older gentalmen with a really clean car. The car has marking of a SS, decales, tie down, and glove box plate and the owner asurres me that is a SS. I checked the RPO (found it in the engine compartment next to the brake booster on the fire wall) and it doen't say Z15. And since its not mine yet i don't want to go threw the car to much. Acording to the owner the title does state SS we'll find out tomarrow for sure he seem to be a straight shooting older gentalmen. Is the title assurance enough? |

What year is it & does the RPO VIN # match? Is he the original owner and can he produce the original window sticker with matching VIN #?
Someone once upon a time could have had a buddy at the DMV do the title, I wouldn't trust it without all the right signs on the vehicle. Be careful & do your homework before you buy! |

Donaldta,
Not original owner, I don't think he will have the window sticker I'm gonna go over there later tonight to check it out again. It is an 82 or 83 fifth generation. Wasn’t really looking for a SS it is not really the trim package I wanted, but since it is a SS (hopefully) I'll make due. It just happens to be in a neighbor’s yard. Scraped together some $$ and hit him up, come to find out it was for sale. And that was my first thought about DMV Employees they can do allot of crafty little things. |

See if the build sheet is in the glove box and look for the Z15 code there. In any case, your putting to much importance into this. 5th gen Elkys both SS and non SS are so similar it really doesn't matter...what does matter is the condition of the vehicle...is it worth the asking price. The SS on a 5th gen does not make it a muscle car, nor does it ensure that the car will be worth more in the future or sought out more by collectors ...that ended in the 70's. A 5th gen original Choo Choo might be worth a lil more than another 5th gen only because it has the MCSS nose already on it...the Choo Choo is really no different than any other 5th gen...other than bolt on body parts and stickers. Just ask yourself what your willing to pay for this Elky...don't let whether or not it's an SS be the determining factor.

very true, if its not the car you want(aka trim pkg) then dont get it and dont get all hung up on the fact that its an ss, i believe there was an ss305 model.... if its a nice car you can work with for a decent price then nothings stopping you.

Thanks for the advice that does settle me down a bit it. I had read that the ss were just cosmetics on the newer 5th gen. It would only make a difference for me on how to go about restoring it. I thought a 5 th gen ss would hold better value than a non ss I have always like my cars to have a stock appearance with a little flare. The car is really clean and well tooken car of runs good AC, power windows new alt. belts, fuel pump, distributor, exhaust, disk brakes and shoes and pads no tears on seats 45 55 bench with arm rest (cruise don't know if that work thou) 305 four speed, and price below market value for it condition. Found the RPO I think, this number was on a plate under the cowl above the brake booster can any one help owner states it is an 82 SS but I don't know has decals and Dash plate. I don’t see the Z15 number and can’t find the Build sheet or anything in glove box either. I posted this second part as a new thread as well. Thank you |

I know this thread is almost a year old and im sure you already either decided to buy it or not, but I stumbled upon it so I figured I'd help out. Just because your cowl tag does not have Z15 on it doesnt mean you dont have a real SS. My 1983 SS is real (I bought it from the original owner who was a family friend, so I know its full history) and does not have Z15 on the cowl tag, but on the Build Sheet it has Z15 listed. Not all SS's have Z15 on the Cowl Tag...but if it isnt on the tag you have to find the build sheet to know for sure. And even though the SS option was only a decal package on the 5th gens, it WILL make it more valuable.
