Exclamation License plates

Does anyone know of an old car hobbyists group that can tell me about CALIF. license plates?
I'm trying to put the old Black and Yellow plated back on "The MISTRESS". These were the old plates that my Dad had on the El Camino and now that it has been restored I would like to use the old plated. My plates are still in good shape.
I have started the process with CA DMV and I was denied. I put on the application that the year of the plate was 1963 and DMV said that a 1963 plate can not go on a 1966.
CAN anyone HELP!!!

Thank you

Read the Following regarding the NEW LAW
See The LAST PARAGRAPH to see what you NEED ↓

California 1969 passenger issue. This gold-on-black base was issued in California from 1963 through 1969 and can still be valid with the proper stickers. California plates stay with the vehicle upon sale, so any vehicle that was issued these plates when new would still carry them today, provided the registration stayed current throughout. Early versions of this base have "63" debossed in the top right sticker well, this one is a later version issued in 1969 and does not.

Sacramento —The Department of Motor Vehicles reminds motorists of two new laws which took effect July 1 in California: implementation of mandatory ignition interlock devices (IIDs), and a new law designed for vintage car collectors which would allow cars from 1963 to 1969 to re-register with black and yellow California plates. Governor Schwarzenegger signed both laws in 2008.

Year of Manufacture license plates. This new law expands the “Year of Manufacture” license plate program to authorize the owner of a automobile, motorcycle or trailer that is a 1969 or older model year vehicle, or the owner of a commercial vehicle or pickup truck that is 1972 or older model year, to utilize Year of Manufacture license plates, and would increase the original application fee from $35 to $45. The $10 annual renewal fee, $20 plate retention fee, and $12 plate transfer fee remain the same.

The new law would require the inclusion of two active license plate series into the Year of Manufacture program:
  • Black background with yellow characters – issued 1963 - 1969;
  • Blue background with yellow characters – issued 1970 - 1990.
To qualify for use, plate configuration cannot have a current record on DMV files. The year sticker displayed on the plates must coincide with the year model of the vehicle being registered with the exception of 1963 year model vehicles.

Black and gold plates without a year sticker can be used for 1963 vehicles as no validating year stickers were issued in 1963. Plates for 1964 through 1972 must be presented with a sticker that matches the year model of the vehicle the plates will be used on. For example, a 1966 Chevy Nomad Wagon will require that a set of black and yellow plates with a 1966 sticker issued by DMV in that year be presented for use.
Additional information on both laws can be found at www.dmv.ca.gov.

What is this sticker that you talk about? The plates that I'm trying to but on are the plates that were on it for as long as I can remember. I got it in 1979 from my father when he passed away. The only thing I did not do was keep the plates curent and because of being in the Navy for 24 years and moving all the time I lost the registration and pink slip. Can I find one of these stickers or is it going to be an impossible act to get the Black and Gold plates on my Mistress?

Black and gold plates === Plates for 1964 through 1972 must be presented with a sticker that matches the year model of the vehicle the plates will be used on. For example, a 1966 Chevy Nomad Wagon will require that a set of black and yellow plates with a 1966 sticker issued by DMV in that year be presented for use.
What That is telling you is
#1 You can use the Black / Yellow Plate
#2 You must have BOTH PLATES
#3 The Plates in Question, must not be assigned
to a Vehicle and Clear. (To find out if your Plates are clear, and NOT ASSIGNED to a Veh in their Data Base, you should be able to go to their Web Site, and under Registration you will go to the Link for Personalized Plates.
There you enter the plate number of your plates "the three letters & three numbers" If the Plates you have are CLEAR, or as it may say, available, -- THEY CAN BE USED,
BUT now comes the Sticker Part.
#4 Your El Camino is a 1966 Model Year, There for you must OBTAIN A STICKER FOR THAT YEAR that is also clear in the DMV DATA BASE. The sticker I'm talking about is the little sticker that is in the upper corner of the Rear Plate. ( Look at the plate in my last post, you will see that it has a Sticker on it, but the one on that plate is a 1969 Sticker. The Sticker you need has to be a 1966 (YELLOW) and it has to be cleared in their Data Base)
NOW THEN-- Look at this Link → http://cgi.ebay.com/1963-California-...item255729aedc
READ the description in that Link. That Set Of Plates is CLEAR, The STICKER is also CLEAR. You will also notice that the Plate Starts with the letter "S" .. The FIRST year that a Black and Yellow Plate was ISSUED in California with the first letter of "S",
was 1966, So THE PLATE that the link shows you is
A CLEAR PLATE , ALSO A CLEAR STICKER OF THE CORRECT YEAR , WITH THE ADDED BONUS OF ALSO BEING PERIOD CORRECT FOR your El Camino.
The Down side is the price tag of $200.00.
NOW your options are, buy that plate /sticker and register your El Camino with them, or see if the plates you have are clear and search Ebay for a clear 1966 yellow sticker for your plates if they are clear, or search Ebay for another set of clear plates and 66 sticker at a better price. Just as I did on that set in the link. NOTE: Ebay is a buyer beware
option, but the link I came across does provide a GUARANTEE that they ARE Clear and can be used. most of the others I came across had no such Guarantee.
Hope this sheds some light on the Subject for you, I tried to give you the easiest explanation I could.
This is what you need ↓ Two clear plates, and a Clear 1966 Sticker

In re reading your last, do I understand you correctly? The Black and Yellow plates have always been on that car? You just let the registration expire? And it's NEVER had any other Plates assigned to it? If this is correct, then it would seem that all that's needed is proof of NON-OPERATION for the expired years, or worst case being that if a non op can not be provided, then payment for all the expired years to bring the Registration back to current and up to date should all that would be needed. Is the Car in your name? You may need to apply for a lost Title. If it was never in your name, and in your Dads, you should be able to get title by providing a copy of his Death Cert.

Thank you CoyoteOn2, Your explation was a little hard to follow but after re-reading it a few times I think I got it. I need to check my plates (which are the orgional for the Camino) to see if they are clear and to find a sticker that is yellow and clear with DMV. Is there a way I can check with DMV to see if the sticker is clear before I buy? The plates are the ones that were on it from my DAD, I did let the registration laps and did not file a NON-OP. But I lost the old registration along with the PINK slip. So last year I started all of the process getting a new registration and PINK slip. With that they gave me new plates for the El Camino. This is why I want to get the old plates put back on the MISTRESS.

You would need the entire number that is printed on the Sticker to do that.
There are REPODUCTIONS of these stickers being sold on Ebay, NOT WHAT YOU WANT !!!
You need the REAL DEAL, and the Problem with that is, if the seller of the real deal reveals
the WHOLE REAL NUMBER, then someone could clone it on a Reproduction one and sell it as real.
So trying to get that number to verify it would be tough.
Here's an example of one that is suppose to be real and Guaranteed ↓
http://cgi.ebay.com/1966-California-...item19b7aeefb4
Another one ↓
http://cgi.ebay.com/1966-California-...item5636f65b19
Yet another but all the numbers are shown on it, unless he guaranteed it to be clear, I'd steer clear
of it ↓
http://cgi.ebay.com/1966-66-Californ...item19b7a898f3
Now this set claims to BOTH BE CLEAR, and Guaranteed to be so ↓
http://cgi.ebay.com/1963-California-...item255729aedc
THIS IS WHAT HE SAYS ABOUT THEM ↓
1963 California License Plates, Pair, includes 1966 original validation sticker, correct for 1966, DMV issued letter "S" in 1966, sticker is required by DMV to register the plates, plates are in very good condion, no extra holes or tears. DMV clear guarantee or will exchage for another pair same condition. Frames not included. If questions r5424@aol.com or 323-394-9464. Rudy.
The only suggestion I can give is to call him, or any other seller and ask questions on their Item ie > is it clear, can it be used, is it real, and will they Guarantee it to be so, in writing for the Ebay protection Guarantee.
I'm not a seller, or a DMV employee, nor am I recommending you to buy one, only trying to assist in the information your requesting.
Since the NEW LAW has passed, it's done all the time, and I've got friends in California that have done so with NO issues. But also, I know two that have been burned in trying to do it as well. The only other thing I can add is A GARRENTEE by word of mouth is just that, and IF the sale is legit, the seller should have NO PROBLEMS providing you with proof of clearance of some kind.

Man all that sounds like a pain in the butt!!! I guess if you want it, then it's worth it but???
I think Texas is easier, I have black 68 truck tags for mine and a sticker that mounts with the plate good till 2013. No inspection needed.
And nothing on my windshield. I don't evenrun a front tag although I am suppose to.

But----the registration you have limits the use of the car to parades and events
(antique with YOM plates)

I have YOM on my 59 and it is registered as a Classic Auto so now I need the safety inspection(and sticker in the windshield)----also get a current year sticker for my 1959 Texas Truck plates. Resgistered as a classic, there are no use limits imposed on the car.
But I do have to pay the personal plate fee, registration fees, classic auto fees every year.

If you drive your Antique/Historical registered car for anything other than a show-parade-event, you are illegal, technically.

I know many people do this to save a few bucks, and I am not judging. But I have 5 vehicles that are registered and insured, and it annoys me that so many misrepresent their registrations just to save $50 a year.

But-----this is of no help to our compadre in
California

I have antique tags cause a 1968 is an antique!! I also have 4 vehicles, another of which I could get classic tags for (but I just use it for play)
But saving $50.00 aint the right answer. And I have double coverage on the ELKO (which I've been told might not be good)
I just like the antique tags. (they look cooooool)

Big Al,
Nobody says what you want / trying to do would be easy, or for that matter Cheap. Your biggest obstacle is the FACT your dealing with the State of California.
Nothings EASY in the GOLDEN STATE! One of the reasons I got the He** out of it.
And from what I've seen taking place there, none too soon.
The local Government in that State always seem to make a Mountain out of a Mole Hill
in damn near anything anyone tries to do. EVEN when THEIR REGULATIONS / LAWS are written in BLACK AND WHITE that a 6th Grader can read and understand. They ALWAYS seem to have the SAME answer when you try to do things. Their response always seems to be ~~~" Sir, I know what it says, BUT THAT is NOT what it MEANS!" Go Figure !
Today it means this, but tomorrow it will mean that, and then the following day, even something different. I FEEL your PAIN & AGREVATION AL.

i would be willing to let go of my Calif. black plates if i can find them both. i remember buying the El C. with crazy papers. no Problem getting the title, but I needed the PO registered to THE PLATES to sign a release so that i could use them. the El C. has been in Pennsylvania since 1993. Don't know if anyone could use them Just tossing it out there
