Besides badging, how do I determine a true 1985 El Camino SS?

Well, I checked that, and there doesn't seem to be anything in the VIN itself that says anything about whether or not it is truely an SS...

Your VIN will not determine whether it's an SS or not. The only way is to check the build sheet or cowl tag for option code z15.

Let me guess...it was advertised as "numbers matching" too..

It always makes me laugh when a seller advertises numbers matching but they don't know what the numbers are and what they match.

Why can't I just answer it here Brad so that everyone (you included) can benefit?

See if there's an RPO tag on the inside of the glove box door. GM started putting the RPO tag in the glove box around 85. If there is, look for Z15. If the tag isn't there you can get a copy of the original vehicle invoice which will show how it was delivered to the dealer.
