Well, I checked that, and there doesn't seem to be anything in the VIN itself that says anything about whether or not it is truely an SS...

Your VIN will not determine whether it's an SS or not. The only way is to check the build sheet or cowl tag for option code z15.
Let me guess...it was advertised as "numbers matching" too.. It always makes me laugh when a seller advertises numbers matching but they don't know what the numbers are and what they match.
