Default The "new guy" 1977 GMC Sprint Classic

Hello,

I just wanted to introduce myself and tell you guys a little about myself and my new ride. My name is Solomon and I live in Seattle. I've always loved old cars and recently came across an ad for this ride and thought to myself its either now or never. So I picked up this 1977 GMC Sprint Classic. For all you VIN Decoders: 5D8047Z501756. I believe it came stock with a 305, not positive, but now it has a 350 in it. I'm not an expert in the field of cars, but hope to learn as much as I can from all you experts out there. There's only a few issues with the car, slightly sagging doors, speedometer not working (but have new one ready to install), bench seat needs to be reupholstered, headliner could use some finishing up, a few small rust spots, but over all not a bad car. So there you have it, thanks for having me and I could definitely use any tips or guides that yall wanna throw my way, it would be greatly appreciated. The pics attached aren't that great, but it was at night, hopefully I can get some better one's on here soon.

Welcome from Texas. Looks like a pretty clean cruck. Need a daylight picture of it.

You'll find answers to just about any Elky question you can come up with on this site.

Have fun

Recheck the 5th digit on your vin. It wont be a number as you had stated, rather it should be a letter. Either, D, L, or U
What do those mean?
original factory engine size.
D=250cid V6
L=350cid 4bbl v8
U=305cid v8

The irony about this is, one year earlier in 76, such as my car, the U engine code meant the big ol 400cid v8!
Your cruck was manufactured in Fremont, CA
And has upgraded trim (you said its classic model, so that explains it)
Thats about all your vin can tell you. Trust me, they coulda made vins better. Then it woulda been easier for me to find out I have a true ss. Oh well...
Enjoy your awesome cruck! I can offer 1 piece of advice. our 4th gens are known to have hard to find parts. And you have the even rarer GMC version. so, DONT LOOSE ANY GMC EMBLEMS!!!!!!!!!!
Treat thoese as gold! I cant even find a bowtie for my grill, couldnt imagine finding the correct gmc plate for the tailgate.

Thumbs up welcome

Welcome to the site Nice looking 4th gen! Congrats on your find.

The speedometer not working could be the cable?? The doors on a 4th gen are 5' long and very heavy...you may just need bushings? Anyway good luck with it and post more pics

Garry

Welcome Solomon; this is the place to be if you own a Sprint or El Camino. I have received tons of help and useful information from the guys here. I'm tying up loose ends on a two year long rebuild of my 72 El Camino.
I'm in Onalaska, about 15 miles east of Chehalis. Let me know if you ever plan a road trip down this way. I'm hoping to get some us Region 19 members together this spring at some convenient place that works for everyone.
Jim
