96 and up is the Vortec heads,, the only problem with the Vortec`s is they do crack,, if you get new one`s, which I am going to get for my 96 Surburan truck, from Jegs, 310.00 each head,, loaded, valve springs ect,,, good deal, how high are you going to wind this one up?? if you plane 7000 + RPM`s then I would go with different heads,, I am a big fan of the 327`s,, had one in a stock elimnator KS/A,, wound it to 6800 + built tough,, Matty man

sounds like a cool build - kinda wish my 66 had its original 327 when I bought it. I've heard nothing but good things about 327s....

have fun with your project

If you intend to buzz it...as in 6500 rpm, I'd probably go with a set of forged pistons rather than the hypereutetic Keith Blacks, at least use the good "pink" rods if using stock and add some ARP rod bolts. The stock valve springs on vortec heads are good to 5000-5500 so they will need to be upgraded to get the best out of the 327. Since oil now-a-days has no zinc in it go with a roller cam and lifters. The small journal 327 will rpm with the best of them but is prone to spin main bearing if you abuse them, so for some added protection as soon as you get it broke in switch to synthetic oil and you should have a fun setup that will last a good long time....Dan

Are Their other Rods Better Than The Orignal 60's rods strength with Todays Metals ? And What Compression will these forged pistons give?

A good set of H beam rods ,, Eagle,, Scat,, for a good all around street motor,, good rods,, 10.0 to 10.5 CR forged pistons,, in my 327`s i put nice splayed main caps & converted to a 4 bolt main splayed caps,, i would plan on keeping the RPM`s to 6000ish for a long life and drivability,, I had to use stock rods & crank with the KS/A,, and a cam specs, 390.410,, yuk,,,, check with SCAT & Eagle for kits,, they aint cheap but worth the $$ stock rods are OK with new ARP bolts and never had an issue cranking my 327 to 6500/6800 but it was a race only motor and never had a failure. My spare motor,, 327 splayed caps is on the back burner,, but a set of Eagle rods, forged pistons and not sure of the heads, most likely Edelbrock heads, Matty man

I heard Vortec heads can't tolerate much valve lift. True???

Do you already have the 327 short block?

I'm not sure I'd be able to tell enough "rev" difference between a 327 and a 350 to justify giving up the extra cubes.
