What engine do I have?

Ok ... definitely a noob question, but I'm trying to learn .

I've got a 1972 and I've been trying to look it up, and based on the vin, have a V-8, 350cid, 4-bbl. I also have the 350 decals on the car.

I mean, granted, I obviously know it's one of the 350's, but I'm not sure which of the ones that were offered through the years it is. Hard to look up specs / parts without that info . I'm just starting to get past the most basic aspects of making things run smooth and now need to start looking up some things like the timing, compression, etc but I didn't realize there were so many engine options that fell under the "350" tag for that sequence of years.

Run the 2 numbers stamped on the block on the front of the passanger side or the number on the back of the block on the drivers side.

Well, I can't find the numbers ... doesn't mean they aren't there. I'm certainly not sure where to look. The only numbers I see stamped are the firing order and spark plug numbers (obviously on the top).

The front passenger side is covered by the alternator, and I don't see anything on the rear driver's side.

Now, I suspect this motor was replaced or rebuilt some time in the past, and that's part of what I'm trying to discover. Would a crate motor not have numbers stamped? Or am I just blind and looking in the wrong place . There's a lot of grime which I tried removing in the named areas, but still didn't see any stamped numbers.

Ah ... under the alternator. I wondered if that might be where it is. Hard to get up under there. I'll try to look today.

At the front end of the passenger side head, where the head meets the block, is a small ledge built into the block. That's where the numbers are stamped.

Here is the location of the stamping. If the block has ever been decked they will be gone. Here you are mainly looking for the "suffix", the last two or three letters. There could also be part of the VIN stamped here.



Here is the location of the casting number. This can also be helpful with ID.

to see the numbers on the front of the motor it may be needed to move the alternator out of the way,,,

to see the numbers on the rear of the motor you may need to move some plug wires and such around,,,a good strong flashlite will help,,a lil carb cleaner sprayed on a old rag ,,wipe the area off with the rag it will be easier to see,,,

Thanks all.

I moved the alternator out of the way (was replacing the belts) and found the following:
12L534459
T1130CKD

So it would appear if I'm reading this right that I've got a '72 (probably) 350, and quite possibly the original engine to this car.

Though I still can't seem to decipher all those numbers ... first ones especially. The second set I think I get, though it's not 100% specific.

So I can (I think?) assume this is the 350 ci, 4 bbl (that much it is), L48? Which might make this (so far) a numbers matching car?

Follow up ... what kind of horsepower / torque am I looking at stock on these? I'm a bit confused by the "gross", "net", and more modern readings. EG: The spec sheet there says 175 or 200. Ok ... but I'd say my butt dyno feels like it's more than that and articles I'm finding online suggest more like 250 to 280 for those years. Does not compute.

the last part of the first number should be the partial vin number on the car,, if its numbers matching..
