Default edelbrock 4bbl conversion/kickdown help

Hey all,
i am trying to convert a 78 malibu with a 305, 2 bbl, and th200 automatic to an edelbrock intake and 1406 carb. I am about to go f'ing ape $hlt trying to hook up the kickdown cable. I have the edebrock bracket that goes to the back of the manif i think part # 8036 plus a pile of other edelbrock b/s parts. My problem seems that the kickdown cable is way too long and the end is about 2 inches away from contacting the stud nomatter how i adjust it. I added an extension to the carb that brings the cable mounting point closer to where it should be but at full throttle i do not get full pull out of it and the trans wont downshift proerly under acceleration. if anyone could help it would be veryyyy deeply appreciated.
I think im gunna go bandage my knuckles and grab a cold 30 pack.

Sounds like you have the wrong carb. for your truck. Contact Edelbrock and ask them for advice.

When I swapped a 200R4 in place of the 200, I had a similar problem only my TV cable was way too short to reach the Edelbrock. I tried all kinds of GM and aftermarket brackets. None worked. I wound up fabricating a bracket that kept the throttle cable where it was, but had mega adjustment for the TV cable. The 200R4 is reeeaaallly sensitive about adjustment and it took a while to get it to shift correctly.

Default 200r4 cable

I have a Studebaker Avanti that I put a 700R4 in and a 1406 carb. I got a kit from BowTie Overdrives for adapting the cable. Not cheap but length is good and allows some fine adjustments for shift quality.

I also got the TV cable kit from Bowtie Overdrives for my Edelbrock 1406. I tried all the Edelbrock mount kits (one that mounts to the intake bolts sort of a gold colored metal, and a black painted one that mounted to the intake manifold accessory bolt holes), one from Spectre, an adapter from B&M, 2 types of factory GM kickdown/throttle cable mounting plates that use the back 2 holes of the carb mount, and an adapter from Sonnax. None of them ever worked for me.

The Bowtie Overdrives setup is custom to each specific carb and mounts on a thin plate that is put under the carb as if it were a spacer. I ordered mine over the phone with them and had to ask for a throttle cable bracket to be added to it. The kit on the website doesn't come with one. The price is kind of salty for a couple little pieces of metal and a cable but it works really well.

the 1406 kit:

their webpage about the cable setup:

Edelbrock did not respond or listen to anything I had to say about their brackets not working with my setup. I also still have a problem with Edelbrock's throttle solenoid kicker to use with air conditioning. With the air cleaner on there is no way to use a return spring on the big hole in the front, there's no room, that kicker is in the way right where the spring would go. There are no other holes for a return spring when the bottom hole is used for the kickdown cable.

This is a picture of my Bowtie Overdrives cable setup.
