steelybill If I remember correctly, the mentioned stud has a nut on it, which can be reached by going across the rear of the pump. It's hard to see, but it's in there !

olderndirt After applying some pressure with a #2 crowbar, was able to get a socket on the offending bolt. I had all? bolts remove from the steering pump but no lateral movement - something in the upper right rear was hanging on. Thanks for the responses.

p.ward7885 Easiest way is to remove it. Just replaced my water pump last week.

JJLT1 take the driver side bolt out of the PS pump,, then see if it will swing up out of the way..
sometimes you just gotta remove it..

agoristmike Any reason not to pull the PS pump off entirely?

Replacing a water pump.

Replacing the water pump on my '83 El Camino 305 and have hit a stumbling block. The lower bolt on the right (driver) side of the pump is blocked by an adjustment slot on the steering pump bracket. I've loosened the pivot bolt, the aforementioned slot bolt and a bolt that allows adjustment on the air condition pump bracket. The steering pump will not budge - what am I missing? Do I have to remove it to get to the water pump bolt?
