Default 68 327 build questions

Hey Everyone,
Just picked up a 68 250HP 327. Block has been bored .060 over, crank turned .010 new rods/flat top 4 relief pistons all weight matched and block has been decked .005 just to clean it up. Running a Summit cam 214/224 duration, 444/466 lift with 112 LSA. Old style Performer 2101 with a 76 Q-Jet. My question is about the heads that came with it. 601's that have been opened to 64cc, ported still using the 1.85 intake and 1.50 ex valves. I will be using a TH350 with 3.08's Just looking for a reliable daily driver I can pass tourists with. Any thoughts?

"601's that have been opened to 64cc"


I don't know what a 601 head is but the '68 327's came with camel hump heads that didn't have any accessory holes on the ends and 64cc combustion chambers. The high performance "fuel injection" 327 heads had 2.02 intake valves and the combustion chamber was relieved for better flow around the valve. Is the 601 head a 305 head with small valves and 58cc combustion chambers?

Yeah; the 601 is a 1980-86 267/305 head with the 58cc chambers.

Your 327 should run fine with the 305 heads, auto trans and 3.08 gears. Even with 64cc combustion chambers and flat top pistons your CR will be 10:1 so you may not be able to run regular gas. I put a set of World Product 305 heads on the original rebuilt 350 in my '80 Chevy deer lease truck because it raised the CR from 8:1 to 9:5. I put a Comp Cams Extreme Energy cam in this truck at the same time and it runs great but I have to use mid range gas. If I had it to do over I would have used aluminum Trick Flow 305 heads and maybe I could run regular gas.

hi 68 327 scrap the block 68 should be a lg jo crank same jo as a 350 so you can use a 010 350 block 060 327 over heating problems

also i have a 68 327 and it is a lg jo rare steel crank out of a dump truck, had another 68 327 ,it was also lg jo crank i put 220 alum heads w/ small 420 cam and 600 holly, works great but not suppose to w/ big heads

Should run just fine! Be sure to use a Good Radiator! An aftermarket like a Champion or a Cold Case will help to keep that .060 over block running cool.

I've had excellent results with the Champion radiator..

That cam should be just right. So many time I see guys over cam engines for street motors. I am guilty myself, I ruined more good running engines with long duration cams then I care to remember lol...
