  1. 1971 Suspension replacement/upgrade

    Suspension & Steering
Hey all, I have a 1971 El Camino that I'm currently using as a primary car and trying to restore. I need to replace my suspension soon (have been replacing ball joints and shocks over past year and all rubber is now shot). So I need to basically replace all the bushings and the rest of the ball...
  2. Trying to lift my 72 a few inches

    Suspension & Steering
So, I'm looking to get a 2"-3" lift on my 72 base El Camino. Nothing crazy, just trying to clear some good A/T tires to give it a bit of a rally look. I'm hoping to either do taller springs or spring spacers, but I'm having a hell of a time finding what in looking for. Hoping to get some answers...

  4. Boxing Rear Lower Control Arms

    Suspension & Steering
Hey all, My '80 plain jane 'Camino has some VERY rusty lower-rear-control arms and I can see (and hear when driving) that those bushings are terrible. The lower control arms themselves are incredibly rusty and sloughing large flakes of material. I decided to address this problem sooner rather...
  5. 84 upper control arm shaft

    Suspension & Steering
I have an 84 el camino. I am puttin new bushings in the upper control arm. The shaft has a washer on it that goes inboard of the bushings. I can't remember if the washer goes on the forward or aft end of the shaft. Any help is much appreciated.
  6. 1976 suspension overhaul

    Suspension & Steering
Hey fellas, just seeing if anyone has any tips. I want to freshen basically all of my suspension with all new parts within budget. Any idea of certain parts that you love that I should buy as well? I want to lower overall about two inches, and I want it to be much stiffer. Any help would be...
  7. Big Hulking ******* suspension upgrades

    Suspension & Steering
So, I'm planning on putting in a 4 link suspension setup in the rear, throwing some big ole disc brakes on all 4 corners, and some other goodies and goodness in there. :nanawrench: Not sure what to do/where to go with the front end suspension. Hotchkis seems awful light on parts for it. Any ideas?
  8. Tighten up the ride

    Suspension & Steering
So I finally got to the point in my rebuild/mod where I was able to drive my 81 around the block a few times. I have owned the cruck for 6 months and this is this first time I have driven it. :nanawrench: I really doubt if this cruck has been on the road for more than 10 years. It felt really...

  10. 1969 Camino next build; rear end & tire size concerns

    Wheels & Tires
I'm currently looking for my second 3rd generation El Camino to do a full custom build on. Basically, I'm going for a pro touring/road trip style build. (aluminum LS motor, t56 trans, performance mods, suspension mods, creature comforts, etc) I'm wondering, what is the absolute biggest tire...
  11. steering slop

    Suspension & Steering
So on my dream machine list, a fully redone suspension is already present. What isn't present is a way to improve the actual steering of the car. My elky has some definite slop in the steering wheel. What can I do to eliminate the slop and improve the actual steering of the vehicle (excluding...
  12. Free dropped rear coil springs

    Suspension & Steering
I just purchased a BMR set of dropped springs, front and rear. Installed the rear springs today. Still doing the tubular a arm conversion and steering work so I'm waiting to do the front. Anyway, I don't know what was on the car before, if it was factory or not. I do know that it sat one inch...
  13. Want the elco a lil' bit taller

    Suspension & Steering
I am 17 just bought my first car/truck a 1980 el camino and have started a restomod on it. It is sitting kind of low and I need to know if just throwing some shocks and springs under it will lift it? Im looking to get about 2.5 to 3 inches taller. Any info would be appreciated! :dontknow:
  14. Mixed up new tie rods

    Suspension & Steering
Hello Everyone, Well I just purchased a complete front end kit for my 67 el camino. I took all the tie rods out of the packages and walked away, when I came back I forgot which ones where the inner and which ones where the outer. How can I figure out which ones are which. Any help is...
  15. Front sway bar upgrades?

    Suspension & Steering
Starting this Friday ( 5-25-12 ), Pick and Pull is having their 1/2 off the entire yard sale! Four day run, and I thought it would be a good time to make a visit. I'd like to replace the front sway bar, and upgrade my front end. Perhaps front springs as well. I'm aware of diameter(s) in...
  16. Biggest backspacing on a 65? 5-3/4???

    Wheels & Tires
I have a 65 elcamino, stock drum brakes all around. I am converting the front to power disc and tubular upper/lower control arms, but the rear will remain stock drums. I am having some rally wheels made with custom backspacing for the rear so i can fit as much tire back there as possible. I...
  17. Trailer Towing?

    Suspension & Steering
So I sold my 1972 Chevy pickup truck a few days ago, it got only 10 mpg on premium fuel. However, I used it for towing the car trailer with 3,500 Lb or less vehicles. Just ate too much fuel, and seldom used. I was thinking that I could either buy a newer pickup, or set up my 1987 El Camino for...
  18. 79 lifting question

    Suspension & Steering
i just got a new engine put in, and it seems to be weighing the front end down more. The front tires rub the car when i hit a bump. when the tires bump the car, the car swerves. I am pretty much clueless when it comes to what i should do. How should i lift the car so that the tires dont rub. I...

    Suspension & Steering
Hey everybody, I'm a little new at this so i apologize if I'm a little slow at first. when I was 16 (I'm still pretty young) I got a 1985 el camino as my first car. I've been driving it for the last few years and I love it, but i would really enjoy being able to redo the front suspension...
  20. Handling improvement and lowering on a budget

    Suspension & Steering
I'm working on rebuilding and outfitting my '79 El Camino for the GRM challenge, which involves running it in both an autocross race as well as a standard 1/4 mile drag race- all on a shoestring (roughly $2k, including buying the car...) budget. As such, I'm looking for all the tips I can get...
